The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

How far will they be living from you?

Well, I guess I'll take off, it's getting hotter every minute. Probably be a short ride today, since it's been awhile.

See you in a bit.

Becky

Sometimes they are stolen and get or turned loose. Sometimes they just get out. Several have been brought to my stable and some just find their way on their own. Some owners (some from other states) are eventually found. Some pay for the care and take them home. The sad thing is that the horses show up in such bad shape. The good news is that they usually heal and get fat and happy.

Have fun but be careful.

Does he look like he was an expensive horse?

They'll be about 60 miles, up east of Seattle near where Ramius works. Not easy to go visit, but close enough to visit fairly frequently. The girls are looking forward to riding, I hear :~)

It's hard to say, he doesn't look like a clod, he has a nice head, his body would look nice if it wasn't for a fairly awkward pose. But there's either something really wonky with that front leg, or it was just an unfortunate moment when you clicked the picture. You've described him as still quite lame... has he been under a vet's care, do they have hope for soundness?

Good Morning.

Looks like the rain is going to let up today. My co-workers had a retirement dinner for me last night. Very good meal, and they got me a gift certificate from Best Buy. More games!

I don't think anyone knows. It wasn't really a matter of if he would heal but if he would even survive a few weeks ago. I'll get more info this evening on what will be done about the leg now. I know they were real concerned that he might founder.

Tragedy here... Pippin has wounded a squirrel. Heh. It was only a matter of time. We're out of seeds, so the squirrels were down on the ground looking for leftovers.

I didn't see any open wounds but he's got something neurologically wrong. He can move, he kicked and such when I picked him up, but isn't moving now. I put him in a cat carrier to rest, he'll either die or recover.

I'd take pictures, but I'm trying to leave him quiet... Don't want to stree him any more.

Poor little trusting squirrel. Maybe he'll shake it off. Don't get bit. I assume Pippin up to date on his rabies?

Yeah - he's had his shots. We don't really have prevalent rabies here.

I do feel bad attracting animals here only to let deadly little killers out with them. It's a hard world for the little things.

He's just a cat doing what cats do. We used to have one that would sit on the porch rail all day. He would leap in the air to try to catch birds as they flew out of a tree. Maybe he would get one out of a hundred but it didn't seem to matter. Pippens a little stinker though. He makes friends with his prey:')

I have to start getting dressed. I have "the state" coming in at 1:30 to look at my classroom and program. Aye! I dread it.

It's actually the other kitten, Tweek, who has been up on the feeder with the squirrels. Pippin didn't befriend them, he's always been after them. But maybe that added to the confusion.

That's good news about the rescue horse. He looks pretty good in that picture, as far as weight goes. Hopefully he'll get sound enough to earn his keep and won't have to be moved again. He deserves a good life.

That halter bridle looks real good on her. I'm glad you like it. They are so low-maintenance, I wouldn't have anything else myself.

I do like it. All the hooks and buckles were different though. Everything had to be adjusted and it's still stiff. I was concerned about my bridle though. I unscrewed those two screws with my fingernail! This one is buckled and stitched.

In the picture he's holding that leg up. He kid of touch toes and hops. My trainer says that if no one claims him and he survives she thinks eventually he will be able to walk and she isn't putting him down. Even with his lameness he seems happy and gets lots of attention. He might make a first time school horse that just has to walk a little bit a few times a week. None of her work horses break much of a sweat:')

Is it "Chicago screws"?

If so, you're going to want to put "LocTite" on them or they'll come undone on you and come apart when you least expect it.

Just be sure the bit isn't in backwards when you do it, because it's hard, but not impossible, to get undone again.
