The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

You're probably right. But I would like for him to be able to drag stuff. I'm just leery of dallieing up to my saddle. The trees not strong enough. Charlie has a roping saddle. I figured once he was use to it, I could drag stuff, but it probably wouldn't be enough to do much for building him up since I can't dally.

But I have thought about it. When Charlie does alot of roping his horse butts really get alot of good muscle definition.

Have you ever watched the TNT movie "Monty Walsh" with Tom Selleck? He plays a old time cowboy at the beginning of the 20th century, when cars and fences were starting to replace horses and the open range. It was really good and I'm sure they released it to video too. I think they did that on most of those TNT westerns.

I wonder if that wouldn't be from coming out of the chute so hard, rather than from the actual roping, coz from what I can tell, after the steer is roped, most of their pulling is done while backing up, and it's not even that far. But then, I'm no cow horse expert either. ;o)

I love the music:)

Have you ever noticed how far all those riders have their feet jammed down in the stirrups...whew.

That would be calf roping. The header on team roping has to pull the cow around, and sometimes a ways, so the heeler can rope the heals. Charlie is a header:)

Yeah, I've seen that movie. It is good.

The sequel to Snowy River had some good riding scenes too. I didn't care for the story line so much, but I like watching him do the obstcale course at the beginning, and the slow mo, scene when he first rides the stallion. I love watching the mud go flying up behind him:)

Truly the main reason I take them from that angle is the horse looks better.

I have a beautiful picture of Jake taken last year on one of our rides. It is from the front and caught him just when he alerted to something in the next site. Don't have access to it right now but cannot post it but I was impressed with my own photographic prowess.

Ah HA! I get my cow sports mixed up. I remember that now. I always end up feeling sorry for the cow. Man don't you know that THEY need a chiropractor after all that!

No. Stopped by a couple of places Saturday afternoon. Didn't make it by that place with the horseshoe horse.

I'm going home this weekend so it will be at least two weeks before I go over there.

I love that final scene in Monty Walsh where he rides up on the smart-alecky City Slicker and his lady friend stuck in the mud out on the range in their little Tin Lizzie and he expects Monte to get off his horse and help him out and Monty say something to the effect of "I reckon not" and then jumps his horse over they guy's car and takes off. It was classic!

I thought of another place. It's just west of the Hwy 157 intersection in Moulton on Hwy 24. I think they mostly specialize in POAs coz it's called KS's Pony Farm, but I drove past there this weekend on my way to the Forest and noticed that they had quite a few horses out there that didn't look like your typical Appy-type POA. Just a thought.

I rode for two months with a cracked wrist when I was a kid. Was petrified of telling my trainer or my mom because I knew that they wouldn't let me near a horse. The trainer kept remarking on how I handled gates strangely and how I was suddenly very careful about dismounting. Rode for a while with a screwed up knee too later on, but I finally had to give in and let that one heal. :-p
