This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Jake's probably not the one you'll have to worry about, although Tennessee was built just like Jake until not too many years ago. It'll be Blade you'll have to watch. He tends to be an 'easy keeper' anyways. Of course you got a lotta years before you gotta worry about that. From what I read, the "magic age" for Walking Horses to start showing symptoms of EMD is about 17, and Tennessee was right on schedule. But I think a lot of it had to do with me moving him to a better pasture. I think if he'd stayed where he was before, where the mares are now, that he would've been fine. There is essentially NO grass over there. But even when he was over there, he'd have what I now recognize as intermittent bouts of laminitis back then. My MIL would tell me of days when he didn't come charging up to the fence at Mach 1 at supper time and slam on the brakes at the last minute and scare her to death like he usually did. He'd just come walking up from the barn real slow. I'd go look at his feet, thinking that maybe he had a stone or something in there, but everything 'looked' fine, and he'd get over it in a few days and I just didn't know what I was looking at back then.
I agree, I'd say it's because she's heavier that she is sweating more....
So the question is which is healthier????
IMO:), I think they need the fat to burn for energy or else they will burn muscle, which isn't good. That's kind of the impression I got from the Purina guy at that seminar I went to.
3 kinds of energy, carbs, fat, protein. Protein (being muscle), is the least effeicent form of energy. Sprinters, (barrel, roping, etc horses) would need carbs. Long distance, (trail), would need the fat. I think Cyn is more healthy now, even tho she is sweating more. Sweating is not a bad thing:). Just tells you the system is working good:)
Becky
She does look a lot better now:) Can't wait to meet her in person:)
Becky
We haven't taken a good posed side view of her for awhile, but here's one in the pasture from 5/20 this year.
She's still narrower than Baythebigolecouch, but she's got some substance and width now.
I think it is. I think she's essentially keeping him in a bare round pen in the day and in the stall at night. The other alternative is a grazing muzzle, but they need to be eating hay to keep their stomach's in balance so I just couldn't see how to work out the logistics of that.
Duchess47 endurance horses are not all that thinned bodied of horses either, and they seem to do fine on thier rides.
Becky
She IS so much nicer looking:)
Rusty was like that. He looked so huge headed when I got him, and even his ears looked to big.
You all have done a great job with her, and it's to her credit that her personality didn't change much. Sometimes they can turn into real pills when they are healthier:)
Becky
See, I always thought she looked great in that picture. You can't see her ribs at all. She just looked 'fit'. Now sure, she didn't have much muscle mass yet coz she'd been kept in a small enclosure, but she didn't look thin to me. But that's just me I guess.
I think the thing Arabs have going for them in sports like endurance is not so much fat content, but the placement of their veins. They have all their veins right under the skin and when they're hot, they pop out for faster cooling. That's just desert build. And Cyn doesn't have that. Her veins don't pop like Bay's do. It's just one feature that helps them in that kind of work... it's not the only feature a horse needs, and other breeds have other strengths.
Did I share, I don't remember, the story from the trail ride a few weeks ago with the guy who commented on Bay's veins? He was a hiker, they'd all walked to where we were and they were taking a break at the falls when we came in. He said "Look at those veins, cool!" Then he said "I draw blood for a living, so I notice things like veins"..... People crack me up... we all bring a different perspective to what we see :~D
Remember that woman on another thread that thought Arabs were ugly because they looked like they didn't have any skin? :~D I just thought of that.
LOL! Well, I guess there's all kinds of tastes in horses. Her head probably looked too big because of the angle the picture was taken, plus she was younger and hadn't quite 'grown into it' yet. She's a good looking hoss regardless!
Your horses are lighter built too, they aren't a heavy breed. Your perspective looking at her would be different than a QH type. I'm a mutt in what I like. I like Arabs and lighter built horses to look at, but I also like sizeable ones to ride :~D Light horses make me look fat :~D
It is funny what people notice:)
In this family we always notice the condition of parking Lots:)
No skin....that's a strange one. The only thing I notice about Arabs, is they don't have big round butts:)
Becky
LOL! You QH people and your butt fixations!
LOL:)
Becky
Fascinating :~)
Just the surfacing, or the design and layout of them as well? See I hate a poorly laid out parking lot.
Speaking of Quarter Horses, I wonder if Cowboyway had any luck in his horse hunting this past weekend.

Becky
True, I'd look thinner leaving on a QH... I'm thinking I'll go all the way on my next horse and make it a draft :~)
