The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Hey, I'm a big fan of using a lot of wire when running electric. If it looks like a big barrier, they'll treat it as one.

Fun and games in the water trough! Bob used to have one that did that. She cracked a couple of those heavy duty rubbermaid troughs. But it was fun to watch her splash in it!

What's the reason for the cross fence? Have you got horses you want separated now, or are you just trying to let part of the pasture grow and recover a little?

You need to buy them a wading pool...

Apparently not coz they think that's what the trough is for. Hey, if they don't mind drinking muddy water, then I don't care either.

Bob did try to drink out of that muddy puddle yesterday.

I'm 99% sure that Tennessee has Equine Metabolic Disorder, as evidenced by his weight gain, even though he only gets about 8oz of plain oats once a day, and he seems to have chronic low-grade laminitis all the time these days. I've had to start keeping him in his Old Mac boots all the time or he just can't walk. His soles are as flat as a block of wood. I'm hoping that getting him off the pasture and getting some weight off of him will finally put a stop to the laminitis. There's still some grass on that little paddock right now but I don't figure it will last very long. That's why I put all the girls in there with him yesterday when I left. I figured that they'd help him eat it down quicker.

LOL.

Rusty use to pick up his water trough with his front teeth and let it drop and stood where the splash would hit him:) They sure find funny ways to play:)

Great pictues, all of them.

I think that was more of a stalling tactic, kinda like Jake pretending to drink every time you said "Let's go Jake".

Oh - so when it's eaten down you'll take the girls away? Poor guy :~D

Sorry about him and his feet. I worry (of course) about the same thing with Bay, wondering if any of his soreness this spring was grass, after what the farrier said.

I'm not familiar with EMD or it's cures, but I think the name and symptoms are descriptive... What's the outlook with what you're doing?

I didn't realize Tennesse had laminitis problems, so sorry.

Well I had my dates messed up. Chris showed up today. I'm kind of glad tho. I left the decision up to him, if Harley could go till I get back. He checked all his feet, and said he was fine till them. Yeah:). That's $60 I don't have to spend right now:)

That's what this one is, and I keep expecting that to happen, but so far they're not STANDING in it, just reaching over and pawing in it so that the water splashes their face. They love water more than any bunch of horses I've ever seen. I can stand there and start spraying one of them and I'll have all 5 standing there before you can turn around, all jockying to be the one in front. You'd think they were a buncha ducks!

Well, I won't take them ALL away. I'll just rotate a different one in there with him every day. Hope was in there on Saturday. Grace is in there with him today. Probably put Ellie in there this evening.

Because EMD is essentially Type 2 diabeties, I don't think it's really what you'd call curable, just manageable, and most of it is diet, just like with people. He essentially needs NO green grass and NO grain. Basically no sugars and very little carbs at all. Just what every horse longs to hear!

That's cool :~) Hopefully they won't break your trough. Becky's Rusty was cool that way too. I hose mine off, thinking it'd feel good when it's hot to have a sprinkler, but they all resent it.

Hosed them all off good when we got home from the ride yesterday, you'd think they'd like that, but of course they went out and rolled and coated themselves with dirt. I just don't get what feels good about that.

Cyn sweat a lot - which means a normal amount, on all the harder rides so far this year, including yesterday. It's notable, because last year she never sweat much at all, just a little under the saddle. She never seemed to be in distress about it, but all the same, I wondered if she just wasn't working very hard, or if she had the same sweating issue Rusty had. You think it's because she has a lot more muscle and mass this year? Was it a health and underweight issue last year? Curious minds want to know.

Poor Tennesee, I know if we told Jake he would be on a diet like that he would run off a cliff! He lives for his food. So just some hay and oats for Tennesee now?

Oh - bland hay and no grain.... poor guy indeed!

Is this what Tuffy's dealing with also?

Mine do that too, especially Tennessee. As soon as I quit hosing he goes and takes a dust bath and turns into MudMan. NASTY!

...You think it's because she has a lot more muscle and mass this year? Was it a health and underweight issue last year?..

I'll bet that's what it is. She's fatter, so she's more insulated and doesn't cool as effiently as when she was thinner so she has to sweat more to compensate. That's why the endurance folks want their horses as lean as possible and why thin-bodied/thin-skinned breeds like Arabs do so well at it.

She's still pretty lightly built, but I think she's about right for her.

She looks so much healthier now than when we got her. Look how thin she was...
