The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Not bad at all :~) Surrounded by timer land for trail riding too, some state, some private, like Weyerhauser.

I wished we'd turned around though, and taken a picture of the sign near the Nisqually River that said "Volcano Evacuation Route" with an arrow :~) Evacuation routes head people uphill in case of mudflows down through the river valleys.

Have you thought about maybe utilizing your degree at the barn (for pay) or maybe working with nearby vets or the county Ag?

You know, I've never thought about that. Not sure if I could. My degree is in chemistry, and while I could figure out dosing and drug stuff pretty quickly, I'm not entirely sure how useful it would be considering I don't have a bio background. But it would be useful in feeding, and being able to really understand drugs and vet followups. I'd have to do some learning on how to give injections and things like that. (In all my years working with horses, I've never had to give injections. Just lucky I guess)

Yeah but they need people to test and treat soil and water. There is pest control. A lot of product testing. That kind of stuff. JAT

You could even offer a service to monitor animals medicated and track what horses recovered the fastest, with types of treatments and medications, the fed they were on etc. I would think that would be useful for owners and vets, not to mention RXs. You wouldn't have to actually do the medicating.

That's absolutely true too. I got a job offer out in CA doing just that as a matter of fact. Well, water testing anyway. Not soil. But boy, CA is quite a haul from MA. Dunno if I could make such a switch.

Yeah. Several years ago I was in South Dakota. Two things caught my eye. All the blonds and tornado underground evacuation signs. I think about all that changes is the direction of the arrows.

Heh... yup, and a twister graphic.

Maybe in So Cal they have a shaky ground graphic and an arrow that says get out from under heavy things.

Oh - there's these too on the coast.... do you have these too in the gulf?

Farmers need to know the chemical components of their soil. Where would be the best place to grow hay? The best type? Chemistry and agriculture go hand in hand. I'm not trying to tell you what to do though. Just seemed a fun way to work around horses.:')

I've never seen one of those. We did have a mild quake in the Gulf a few weeks ago. Florida and Alabama felt it.

She's a roamer. I came home from lunch and she followed me in my offce. When I got back this evening she was in her cage.

You're right. And no worries, I know that you're not trying to tell me what to do. It's just not an option that I've much considered, because farming really isn't all that big in my neck of the country. I'm close to Boston, living in a yuppie little 'burb. :-p (Not my choice) We do have an agricultural high school in my county though, and our agricultrual office supports a big 4-H program, of which the horse program is the largest. I know that if I really wanted to I could get a job working with horses, and managing a barn, (And believe me, in my heart of hearts I really want to) but I think mostly I'm afraid to take that leap.

What a pretty little girl. Still can't imagine George (my lovebird) being allowed to fly around the house. The cats would get him or he would get me :)

Great to hear from you! How are things in your neck of the woods?

Everything's fine here. Well, except the weather :) Cold at night - freeaing my garden, 80' during the day. Back to the 50' temperature change a day.

How is your grandfather doing?

I just worry about stepping on her. She doesn't fly much. She walks and climbs.
