This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Well, he must be bigger then I ever thought, I "still" can't get over he needed a bigger saddle then Belle needed:) He measured 15.3 too. And his withers are not high like Majors. Looks to me like Majors back is actually several inches shorter then his withers. Harley doesn't have much withers.
Becky
I understand. That was kind of what Dot was all about.
But then after I really thought about it, I decided once was enough:)
So maybe you need your once:)
Becky
LOL! I didn't think so. What I meant was, Hair thinks she wants a Dressage horse, but she really doesn't, she just wants a nice horse to mess with, whether she raises one or buys one from somebody else and I don't think she'll be disappointed with what ever she ends up with. And maybe I'm wrong and am just totally full of crap. It's been said before. ;o)
LOL...Oh, Okay....
Yeah, like I want a barrel horse:)
Becky
Once is enough for me too... or I'd be over-run with horses if I can't get over my fear of selling :~)
I got into a conversation with women at the feed store the other day about my pony, she wanted to take my number down because she might know someone who would want her. As much as I say I'd like to see her worked, I'm reluctant to let go. It was funny because we talked all about her and her issues and mine, and much later on it came around to where I lived and when I described where we are, she said "Oh - you're the one that keeps adding new Bay horses, all different sizes! We always look to see what new bay horse you might have added!" I said "It does seem we don't bring anything but the same color bay horse home, doesn't it?"
EXACTLY!
You're right, I'll probably never really do dressage at this point. Right now I'm too pudgy to look good, and if you don't look good, you look silly doing dressage. Dressage is for the pretty people!
So you're right, I may want a dressage horse, but what I'll end up actually doing is trail. :~)
And you know what...trail horses require as much training, IMO, as does a dressage....
I always cringe with annoyance (and I know you didn't mean it that way at all, this is just a pet peeve I have:), when people say things like "just a trail horse" or not good for anything but trails, etc....
I may have told this one time, but I know this girl who "trains" barrel horse (yeah right). In 10 years I've never seen this girl do anything but exhibitions, and on the same horse. She asked me time, after it had been awhile since I saw her, "are you still doing your "little" trail rides. I wanted to slap her, and/or ask her if she was still doing her little exhibitions:), but since I'm such a nice person......
Anyway, it takes a lot to make a horse into a nice quiet well behaved trail horse. You don't have to be winning money, or trophies to be considered a good horsemen.
< /rant > :)
Becky
I remember you telling about her and the 'little trail ride' comment :~)
I agree. The best horsemen I know are trail riders.
Well, after seeing her, it would be hard to let her go to just anyone, and not because of the person...she may have some issues, but she "wants" to please so bad...
I've run into that so many times...wanting to sell a horse, but the horse having some special problem that makes it hard to let them go just anywhere...
Becky
And I didn't mean that in a way to be tooting my own horn about training trail horses....
I have a lot to learn. This last trail ride showed that. I've got a great horse, he won because of him...as my NOT placing in horsemanship showed. I take very little credit for HIS first place win. I knew once I had the tack problems fixed, he'd be great because HE is great. HE makes me look good, not vice versa...
Becky
Her motivations are good, she's just fearful and nervous and needs patience and the right job. I'm reluctant to anyone who says they want her for a backyard kid, even if they ~tell me~ they will put the training in her that she needs. I just think people see small size and think she's cute and harmless.
I'd trust someone a lot more who said they wanted to train her to jump and resell her for a lot of money to a pony clubber. Those types are good riders, they want her speed, and they know that ponies aren't just for setting a kid on and letting them go. They treat them as athletes and horses, not pets.
Toot your own horn! You're one of the good horsemen I know who 'just' does trail :~)
Is this what she said she wanted her for?
Becky
Well thanks....but I'm not tooting till I'm scoring 96 or above:) Then you won't be able to stand me:)
Becky
No, actually, the people she has in mind are pony clubbers. I was speaking more about the woman from the tack shop who came out to see her once. I had to talk her out of buying, and she wanted to get her checkbook out.
Heh... I'm sure you'll ~try~ to act humble :~)
Well that might not be too bad...
I'd almost say, come to my house and let me watch you work with the horse for awhile, and see how you do...THEN well talk about selling.
Maybe get a hold of someone in the club and find a kid who really likes/wants to work with one. Maybe offer to pay show fees once they get her working. That should be payment enough to a kid who wants to work with one...
Becky
Well, you'll know that if I APPEAR humble, it will be an act:)
Becky
I'd really like it if the right surrogate kid wanted to work with her. If there was a kid who had what it will take but who couldn't afford one or something, I'd like to take her wherever she could go.... would be fun! Just need to have that kid appear in my life, I don't know how to find one when you're looking. When I was a kid, I just started hanging around outside the gate at a neighbor's. :~)
