The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yeah, I believe it has arrived here too. The forecast puts our high temps in the 70's all next week.

It's funny how the 70's in the fall feels different then the 70's in the spring...there is just a different feel to the air...

Oh, and thanks:)

Good morning everyone,

Happy Anniversary Becky!

Today I'm leaving work at 11:00 am to deliver Deuce to the hospital. Can't wait. Tried to hand graze him last night but with the big temp drop and the wind he was playing Airs Above the Ground on his leadline. At least he was light on the shank...

Terrible local story here. Joey Porter (Pgh Steelers) apparently has a pit bull and a bull mastiff who got loose and killed a mini owned by the neighbor.. Police said the enclosure had looked secure but there are going to be charges filed. I love dogs but I'd kill anything that menaced my horses.

Our leaves have already started to turn on the maples and alders... I think they were stressed from the lack of rain.

Any dogs that would do that need to be killed.

Lack of rain will make them turn and have more color then just turning brown. Something about the sugar content that goes up when there is a drought....Our fall last year was a real pretty one. Since we are getting rain now some, I'm not sure how that will effect the leaves turning this year...

Are they doing Deuce's surgery today or are you just getting him there and they'll do it tomorrow? Let us know what time they'll be doing it so we can keep him in our prayers.

First surgery is tomorrow. Not sure what time he is scheduled. Also not sure how many laser surgeries he'll need to make the mass small enough to remove. Am thinking he'll be there a week as they wait one day in between procedures. Will keep everyone updated and thank you so much all for your good wishes!

...I also put her in an area that took more energy to get thru (sand). I don't know if that was right or not...

I've been thinking about SL's behavior at your beach ride and am wondering if the depth of the sand may have contributed to her agitation. I know that my horses don't like deep mud and tend to panic a little bit when they get into it, and the loose sand may have felt similar to her and may explain why she really wasn't comfortable ANYWHERE you put her. She may have wanted to go exactly where they other horse went because she may have thought that the footing was better there than where she was standing, especially since they weren't showing any signs of having trouble with it. When they rode off and she was alone, she just had to deal with it by herself, which may explain why she calmed down. That's my theory of the day and may not be what happened at all. I'm just trying to imagine what my horses might have done in a similar situation. I'm sure that the more she's exposed to the beach, the better she'll get at it.

I just finally went and kicked the horses out of the barn. Since Bay can come and go as he pleases, I will usually wait till he comes out on his own to tell me he's done with breakfast and tired of being cooped up. It's a little windy and cold and he had a look that said he might choose to stay in all day if I let him :~)

Now I have stalls to clean again... welcome to autumn :~)

Yeah,I think you are right. I went prepared for the beach bugs but not herding. I think it was both and maybe exaggerated because of that. As for as the sand though, she should be used to that since she walks in it in the arena. Not the dunes though. Those were definitely spooky to her. Probably the first "hills" she has ever seen:') Anyway, I think I'm going to break it down. As soon as I can, I'm going to take her back by herself or just with Okie and start working on some stuff at the barn. Thinking back, that time I let her dump me was when we were in front of the barn and she balked when I started to walk her away. I don't have a book on herding though. Sounds like that is a subject all by itself.

It's nice today here too. There is a "crispness" in the air. You can feel, fall is coming.

...welcome to autumn :~)

I'm ready for it too! The too-hot too-dry definately went on for TOO long. It's been in the mid-70's here the last few days with the morning lows in the mid-40's and I've LOVED it. It's supposed to start raining this evening though and rain all weekend and I really didn't want it to do that because I finally found some hay and need to go pick it up this weekend. My FIL finally got the lights put back on the hay trailer too, so I was all set, but I guess it'll have to wait. All the old hay in the barn will need to come outside so I can put the new hay at the back and I really don't want to do that when it's wet outside. But we've been needing the rain, so I won't complain too much. I just hope it doesn't set in to raining and rain every weekend because I really want to do some Fall Foliage rides to some places that we don't usually go. October and November are usually our best months to ride.

We have another month here before the trails close, but with all the projects we have to do and this sudden change in the weather, I think we may be done, unless we get a nice day and a burst of enthusiasm for it.

That's OK, I think we got in some terrific rides this year. :~)

Yeah, you did do some good riding this summer.

On another note, I just got an e-mail from Country Supply and they have a horse photo contest going and I think you ought to enter some of your pictures. Heck, I may enter some of mine, but mine aren't as good as yours. The grand prize is a $350 Country Supply gift certificate. If nothing else, there's some really good pictures posted over there to look at. Here's the link...
