This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I can't believe you're having to spray a 3 acre pasture with a gallon sprayer! I'll bet you're give out. I've had problems with the sprayer clogging up too and never knew why until recently. My FIL told me that Roundup that was left over in the sprayer would skim over, kinda like paint, and that's what was clogging up the sprayer. He said he had dumped the old Roundup out in a bucket and strained it through a screen and that's how he found the gummy stuff in there. After it was strained, he didn't have any more problems with clogging. That may not be the kind of problem that you're having, but I just thought I'd throw that out there.
I decided not to buy that dallisgrass hay. After looking some of the seed heads on some of the grass that was still standing around the perimeter of the field, they looked awfully black and lumpy, and when I compared them to the pictures of the dallisgrass ergot, I was just afraid to get it. It may have just been mature seed heads, but since I'd never fed dallisgrass hay and since the symptoms of dallisgrass ergot poisoning are so severe in horses, I just decided that I'd rather be safe than sorry.
I showed the guy the article and pictures I printed out off of the internet but I know he thought I was crazy because he said he'd never heard of it and had been feeding his cows this kind of hay for years and they were fine. But sometimes cows stomachs can handle stuff that horses can't. I pulled some of the seed stems and took them with me and showed them to this guy here at work who has cows and he said that he didn't think it looked good either, but I'll probably second-guess myself all winter if I don't find any more hay. :-/
Good morning:)
It shouldn't take you long to fatten those horses up doing that:), sounds like they are already feeling better. Funny what a little nutrition will do for a body:)

Really nice pictures...Hope handling that crowd, IMO, is sure a very very positive sign...she'll make a nice horse.
Being one of those QH people who are fixated on butts:), first thing I noticed about the babies pictures is Goose has a very nice looking hip:)

The little rubber gasket on the pump kept coming off. They should be really cleaned out after each use, but I neglect to do that also. I am using 4 2 D. It will kill the weeds, but leave what little grass there is, alive. That stuff is so strong. It was in my nose all night. The spraying would not be too bad, if I didn't have to keep pumping the dang thing up. Hauling water out is not fun either. I took my granddaughter's little wagon with gallons jugs of water. Since we fenced in the little paddock area, you can't get a tractor out there.
Wow, all the pictures are beautiful, but the second one of the waterfall with that big rock sitting on the ledge is incredible. You suppose that thing came off the top and landed there...
Becky
How is the rash?
Seriously, that's a problem in that area. Fortunately the freeze-thaw cycle is what gets them rolling, so by spring time whatever's going to cut loose has mostly cut loose. There are always exceptions, of course . . .

The mountain up at Newfound Gap keeps trying to take over the road . . .
It is already better, my eye was not swelled shut this morning, and all the redness has faded a lot.
He did not give me a shot. He gave me 6 days of Prednisone. Each day I take one less then the day before. Stuff really works fast. He also gave me a pill to take for the itch, even tho I told him it didn't itch all that much. He had me take it while I was there, and it knocked me smooth out for most of the rest of the day.
Becky
There are areas around here like that. Signs saying beware of falling rock.
It just looks like that rock didn't come from the cliff behind it....I was wondering how far back up the mountain it came from, or did it? That's a very big rock to have been pushed by water, unless that waterfall really gets to flowing???
Becky
Same waterfall with more water in it:
Thanks:)
Becky
Well that's one way to not itch! Glad you're feeling better. I've done the routine with decreasing amounts of prednisone many many times with itchy dogs. Wish I had some now, Homer is really itchy, and we've wondered it it's not a food allergy. We did get some new treats.
Wow!
I can see it happening now:)
Becky
I've been took Susie to the vet before I left for Wa. and got her a shot. I helped a lot. He said I could give it too her once a month. I took her again, and now it's not working, hardly at all...she's been very itchy. I'm wondering if it has to do with everything is damp now with dew in the morning. I've always thought that wet grass made her worse then dry..
Becky
Hmm.... too bad it didn't work the second time... wonder if you got a bad batch? Prednisone, in my experience stops itching no matter what's causing it.
I don't know that that is what was in the shot he gave her. When my old vet was alive he gave her shots too and they did the same thing worked the first time, but not after...
Those flea meds like Advantage and Frontline, do the same thing on her, work once then not again.
Becky

The boom isn't exactly like that, but it's similar. It's got a 12v pump, so no running out of pressure.
Huh - so maybe it's her. Her immune system thinks the cure is the disease!
