The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Don't know about the ski resort. But just about any slope in the Southeast has to make its own snow.

Here are some shots of Cloudland Canyon:

Boy, those are nice. Do they have horse trails too?

I took some more pictures of the babies and their Mamas. They're really looking grown up now...

Truly...

Truly's colt "Goose"

One of his favorite passtimes...Let's Jump on Mama's Back...

Bluebell...

Bluebell's filly Whirlwind. She was not a happy camper about being tied up and having to stand still to have her picture taken so I only got one that was even half way decent. She's got the halter wrapped around her head and the Don King hairdo going in this picture...

Don't know if there are horse trails in the area, but the path into the canyon is VERY steep and I think there are even steps in some places.

If there are trails into the canyon, they must come in by a different route.

Here is the link to Frog's Trail movies that accompany the pictures. They're labeled 7SpringsTrailRide 1, 2, and 3: Movie Folder

Here's Frog's caption/description for each one:

1: This one was at the place I called TheTopOfTheWorld. You even get a little bit of local Color Commentary in the background from the trail boss. I didn’t realize it when I was filming, but it’s kinda funny…

2: This one was on the trail on the way to the Wave Rock. If you decide to post it you’ll need to edit off the end because I thought I cut the camera off before I stuffed it into my pommel bag but I didn’t, so you get a lot of black screen and saddle squeaking before I pull it back out again, intending to turn it on, and actually turn it off.

Note: I didn't edit it... because I thought it was funner left in :~D She gets up to the steep part and says "OK I'm gonna put this camera UP now... and then it goes in her bag and we hear a bunch of jostling, and then "whoa" a couple times and then the camera comes back out"... I liked it as-is :~D

3: This one is just a continuation of #2. It’s not that good but I thought I’d send it anyways. The trail got a little too rocky beyond this point and I needed both my hands and all my concentration so I didn’t get any video of that part, but it sure was pretty.

"Don't they have a ski slope over there with manmade snow?"

It is called Cloudmont and there is a little mountain resort town named Mentone nearby. Been there many times to several restaurants.

We have dallisgrass around here too (spelled dallis not "dallas"). I haven't ever run into hay made from it. But, my horses prefer the dallis grass to just about anything else and will eat it first in the pasture. It tends to grow in with bermuda as it likes about the same kind of conditions as bermuda. I used to call it "dallas" too until I looked it up and found out it was spelled "dallis".

I don't know how it stacks up nutritionally, but it should be highly palatable to your horses.

Hey thanks! That's good to know that your horses like it. I'll bet it'll make a good hay then. I feel better about it now. I'll have it analyzed just out of curiosity so I'll let you know how it stacks up.

It's a GAITED App!

Woot! That is what I wanted. Did he do the Indian Shuffle or was he a crossbreed and rack or pace? Awesome pics and I really enjoyed the videos. I would fit right in with those old farts!...lol

I don't guess I know the difference, but what ever it was looked like a smooth 4-beat gait. One of my riding buddies said that the owner said that it wasn't a true App, that one or both of it's parents were Spotted Saddle Horse, but you couldn't tell it by me. With that full blanket, mottled skin, white sclera and thin mane and tail, it looked like full-blooded App to me. Especially with that big-ol' fat butt. You could roll an egg down the groove in that horse's butt!

Hey, I just Googled Dallisgrass and found something called Dallisgrass Ergot. Apparently it's some fairly nasty fungal stuff that gets on the seedheads and can cause neurological symptoms like tremmors, stumbling and so on. I'll have to be real careful and check this hay out good before I buy it but at least now I know what to look for. Thanks again!

Those are gorgeous pictures. I love the App. He sure looks like an old foundation type with the thin mane and tail and his coloring.

The babies are growing so big and they look great. Your mares are pretty patient too - mine would knock Goose's legs out from under him if he tried that. :)

I can't get them to load here at home, I'll give it a try at work tomorrow.

One of my mares does the running walk, I don't know if she can do the shuffle, I've never seen it. A gelding I had in NC was a natural at racking (?) very odd, he was full appaloosa, but every once in awhile he'd rack.

Good Morning.

Wonderful weather prediction for the rest of the week and weekend. High 70's and sunshine. Good thing, it might take me that long to finish spraying the pasture. The sprayer was giving me grief. Today, I will buy a new one.

The new mares were turned out and Sable even did a little buck. We have been feeding them 3 times a day. The noon feeding is about half of what they are getting in the morning and evening.
