The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I've always said, you ought to think about turning that barn into a lab:') There should be a way to combine the two things you love.

It didn't really "surprise" me, just found it interesting with all the barefoot thing going around. It's still a big controversy among the NATRC people, and one of the "horses need to be shod" advocates over there pointed it out:) Things could get interesting over there today:)

As for me, I just find it hard to believe that a horse rode as much as endurance horses are could go barefoot, but there are those who think they can.

Ah - I'll be sure to check in over there and see how it goes... Still waking up here.

I looked again at the others, and I saw them as all shod, some with pads.

I didn't look for pads.

I've wondered how much protection they give.

The pads just stood out to me on this horse because they're blue...

I don't know how much they do for them, I wonder the same thing about Bay's, but Bay sure walks out over those stumble rocks :~)

I noticed too, that the horses were all pretty lean, but none of them looked ribby.

That tight underline in all of them is what I've been hoping to see in Harley. Belle's underline looked like that, altho she still maintained her very muscular, heavy looking build. Looked beautiful to me:)

OK, I wondered how you "saw" the pads. I never enlarged any of the other pictures.

One more comment on the "weight" of these horses...The bay looks the heaviest, IMO...

This week when I noticed Harley looking like he was tightening up, I increased his feed again:), not much, just a little to see if it will help him from the little show of gassing out he displayed last week.

A roached mane on an Arab... Sacrelige!

I noticed just now that all the manes are pulled short or roached, one who had a long mane it was braided in long braids... I bet that's all about heat shedding too. A long mane would hold the heat on one side of the neck when they want to be cooling.

Most of the riders at the CTR's I go too braid long, heavy manes. I use to do that with Belle's. Her's wasn't long but it was pretty thick.

Harley's is soooooo thin, I don't think it's an issue for him. It is all about helping them to cool.

I admit I'm surprised Harley has as much gut as he has, with the complete feed and the amount of work he's doing. It's just his build probably, he looks more like an old fashioned QH and not as much like a Thoroughbred as some. How big his Belle? I have the impression that she's a much taller horse than Harley.

The greys all look thin, don't they? The Bay looks like a thoroughbred. I think he's a bigger horse than the greys are too. Hard to tell what the height of all those riders are, but his rider looks very tall and he still looks tall.

Belle and Harley are right at the same height, but IMO, she always looked like a heavier built horse then he is. I don't think he looks like the old fashioned QH's, I've always thought he had a longer leaner look to him. One thing that might have been an advantage for Belle, is her back was shorter, which maybe why she "looked" heavier, and wider built then Harley. That is why I was so surprised that her saddle didn't fit Harley. She looks heavier and wider. But it must be optical illusion.

I'm going to need to bring her up here and stand them side by side, and compare.

OK - I'd like to see that side by side, because I've had the wrong impression that she was a big tall TB type, and that Harley was bulkier.

To me, Harley looks like a 'normal' old fashioned QH, not the overstuffed behemoths that show in halter now.

No - he's in the "morning run" pictures if you go back to the home. They've got action shots of the riders either going out or coming in.... some look like they just started, some are all wet coming back :~)

Thanks guys! :-)

I'll hear back from one barn tomorrow. They raise and train QHs, though I don't know the bloodlines. I just know that they go for big money. Another guy wants me to show and excercise his hunter/jumpers and he does the show circut down in FL.
