This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Sounds like a super trainer... that's what I'd want too.
Well, I spose thinking about it keeps him young, as long as I don't need veterinary intervention on anyone's part because of it.
Yeah - me too :~\
I know what you mean. Miss Grace has taken it upon herself to become Boss Hoss since Tennessee has been confined to the dry lot and has been kicking the daylights out of Bob. Of course he deserves it most of the time, but she's going to have him looking like an App before too long, with all the black marks he's getting on his butt from her knocking the hide off of him. At least she doesn't have shoes on.
Hey, I just happened to think about you and wondered if you'd had any luck in finding a horse yet? You still working at Browns Ferry?
Becky
HA! I think they might be :~)
I just got back from riding again. Kristy came up, and I didn't have anything else to do, and since we didn't ride that hard this morning I went with her. We had a good time.
Becky
Ah - Did she bring a horse, or did Rocky have to work?
No, no, she brought Rowdy.
She was gone for a week with her mother to work, and then was off another week catching up on home stuff. Now she is ready to start riding him a bit so she can finish out the barrel season.
Becky
Well that's not right. After they make a decision, they shouldn't go back and take things away from kids.
I picked this up on the NATRC site. This is the winner of the best conditioned horse in the FEI World Endurance Championship that was held Aug 20 in Aachen Germany. He is a French horse, 11 yo Arab, named Hifrane du Barthas.

Few things I found interesting, the horse is shod with metal shoes, he has white spots on his withers, on both sides.
Someone also posted this comment and I found it interesting. Duchess do they do this at the rides your DIL goes too.
he best condition award is awarded to the horse who the vet committee deemed in the best condition of the first ten finishers. They are trotted out for soundness, and they have a very thorough metabolic check, including a CRI. For those who do not know, a CRI (cardiac recovery index) Is where a horse they start with taking the horse's pulse, then trotting the horse out and back 125 feet, and then rechecking the pulse after 60 seconds from the first pulse check. A good CRI index is one where the second pulse is equal or less than the first. A poor CRI is one where the second pulse is greater than the first.

And here's a link to some more pictures of some of the other horses that made it into the Best Conditioned competition.

I ran thru most of these pictures, I also found it interesting that it looks to me like all the horses but the winner were grays. I've been told numerous times that the light colored horses "do so much better then the darker ones, cool down quicker". Makes you wonder:)

Nice out again. I have been working on that big island out front for 2 days now. Today, I hope to finish and put some mulch done.
The lady who owns the Appaloosa gelding emailed me and dropped her price $250...hmmm he is looking better now.
Interesting article, Becky. Thanks for the link.
I've been tied up with my own horsey stuff lately so have been distracted. Has anyone seen an update on Barbaro in the last week?
I just checked Tim Woolley's site for an update and he is doing well. Still going out to graze each day. His condition is still considered serious, but from what I have read and heard, he seems to have turned the corner after that awful time a few weeks ago.
In other news, I also saw on Tim's site where St. Liam was euthanized yesterday afternoon after a freak accident while being led to his paddock. He was goofing around and fell awkwardly on his left hing leg breaking his tibia into at least 20 pieces. And, the news on Lost in the Fog is heartbreaking. Last Friday during exploratory surgery, additional cancerous masses were discovered, including a large mass in his body cavity that is attached to his spine. Inoperable, and he is given a month to live at most. Plans are to give him 10 days to 2 weeks in his home stable, then euthanize before he becomes too uncomfortable. Currently, he suffers from minor periodic discomfort that is being managed thru pain meds. His connections are all devasted by the news.
Thanks for the good news on Barbaro. The other news is quite terrible. Sometimes it's difficult to come to terms with the fact that medicine cannot fix everything.
Hey everyone. I'm probably going to be among the missing for a while. I've moved and I won't have internet for a while. (Right now I'm at work cleaning out a lab) My temporary job ended last week, so now I'm floating around looking for things to do. I got a couple of job offers at barns believe it or not, and I might do it because it's a change of pace, and something I know a lot about and know how to do well. I have the rest of my life to do science, and this is something that I can do while looking for a permenent lab job.
Notice that this horse has long, lean muscles rather than the bulky muscles. It makes it easier somehow for them to cool down, also to handle the pace.
We have found that the only place where apps excel over arabs is that they can drop their pulse and resperation more rapidly than the arab. Otherwise, they are about the same, just depends on the attitude. And Indy doesn't do as well in endurance as Sonny or Fancy, different build.
The white spots I'd have asked about, to find out when they occurred, but why do the metal shoes surprise you?
He looks sooo lean, and good... I think most of the greys look so underweight by pleasure horse standards, and I bet they aren't underfed :~)
