The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Thanks. ya'll.

When the weather cools off I'll try to get more videos. It was like a furnace outside working last night. Even at 5:30 in the morning it's 86 degrees so by the time the sun comes up we are already heading into the 90's. I'm soooo ready for cooler weather.

Good Morning.

Nice easy rain this morning. Kids left for horse show. With the rain, I don't know if I want to go watch. About an hour's drive South of here. I could go and if it rains too hard, there is a casino not too far away from the show grounds, in West Virginia....

I started a thread over on the horseshoes.com forum, on the glue on shoes. I'll probably get skewered about something.

Good morning all.

Another hot, nearly-cloudless day here in the Texas Hill Country.

Need some advice.

My white mare is in a pasture with a stallion in the adjoining pasture. I think he may have gotten out and bred her.

Is it not a first sign of pregnancy that a mare's udder swells up? She sure looks bulky but her udder is small as it usually is.

If she's bred I sure would not mind.

When might have this happened?

I've not seen them bag up until way at the end... sometimes within hours... I'd have a vet check her if you think she might be :~)

Duchess: Hair

It could have happened as long as six months ago.

The neighbor on my fenceline of the leased 70 acres has cows as well as the stud.

Several months ago I saw some cattle on my 70 acres, but they came and got them out. Then about a month ago he told me he was running a stud in there too. So it could have been three-six months ago.

I'll get a vet check, then, if as Hair says the udder might not swell until near the end of term.

Man, I wouldn't mind.

This is the white mare that I took to a nice local stallion, and she absolutely refused him. Tried three times. To no avail.

Friend said I should have got her a nightie and lipstick, ha ha. She was a real witch. What she really needed was high heels and a whip. Dominatrix!

However....

You won't see any visible signs until she's about 8mos or so, she'll look pregnant. The only thing this early would be she would not be going into heat, which if there's a stallion across the fence you would notice I'd think.

A vet can confirm pregnancy and may be able to give you an idea of how far along. The earliest I've had a mare bag up is about three weeks before foaling. Generally they spend a lot of time laying down their last two or three months, taking the weight off their feet.

When did you take her to this local stallion? Less than 11 months ago? I remember the pictures but I don't remember when. Maybe she refused because she was already pregnant.

No, it was more like a year ago and I was there the whole time and it didn't happen.

Thanks for the advice!

I haven't noticed her going into heat but will watch for it more closely.

I was wondering if maybe she was bred by the stallion across the fence before she went to the other guy and that's why she wouldn't breed.

I think you might want to have a vet check her :)

"Several months ago I saw some cattle on my 70 acres, but they came and got them out. Then about a month ago he told me he was running a stud in there too."

Bad idea to run a stud horse with cattle. Been there, done that and lost several head. The horse chased the cows until they collapsed of exhaustion. Then the horse would bite them until they died. Took a while to determine what was killing the cows but someone saw him doing it. The horse left that very same day.

Good Morning.

The horse show yesterday didn't have a lot of entries. My daughter called me and said they were moving very fast, and would probably be over before I drove there. So, no casino either. Alison won a couple thirds, a second and a fourth. Today, they are at another one. I am going to try and see that gelding today, then head up to the show. No rain today, very nice and sunny. Only going to be in the high 70's. Now, that is my kind of weather.

Squarebarb, my only suggestion, is have the vet check her. Is that the only sign of change?

In my experience, the udders don't swell till towards the end of the pregnancy.

Has this mare ever been in foal in the past?

Becky

Good morning all!

I will have the vet check her. He comes out to our little rural community every wednesday and if you want him to make a ranch call, you have to call him on Monday so I will do that.

It would be such a thrill if she were in foal!

Miss Targets, are you looking to buy a new gelding?

What are you doing for hay? I'm on my last round bale with no prospects for more. I'll have to go to strictly square bales, which is much more expensive for me, but hey, ya gotta do whatcha gotta do.
