The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

It is interesting... I always have to wonder if Willie agrees with me on something, but my heart is with him on this issue.

Anything else of interest going on on the NATRC site?

LOL...you understand that wasn't my point:). Some excitment over there that a "celeb" was jumping in on this issue, just thought you might be interested too.

No nothing much, same ole, same ole. I just lurk, those people are as nutty as most people on the internet...err...well:), LOL...I've learned I don't do well on sites like that, too use to the good hot debate on FR:). You all are use to me:)...at least I think you are:)

I'm the same way, I want to jump in and argue with a lot of the threads on that farrier forum, but I keep holding back because I'm not sure you're really supposed to do more than just post questions if you aren't a farrier.

But I've been thinking about posting a discussion thread about this whole 'radiograph' issue. They act like taking radiographs before and after shoeing is a perfectly normal thing to do, like they can't really assess a shoe correctly without it. Huh? In what world is that normal? Is it because the feet being discussed are abnormal feet? Who does that in real life? Two vet appts and xrays every 8 weeks? I don't think so!

I'm quickly scanning through the Merikle Waters thread and that girl is an idiot.

This reply from Rick Burten cracked me up:

OK, you want suggestions, here are a few.

1. Don't breed this horse again.
2. Get a vet-farrier team that knows that putting any kind of edge supporting shoe on a foundered horse, withouth some form of mechanical support for the frog, bars, commissures, and sole from the true apex of the frog reaward, is not only dumb, but stupid too.
3. Don't breed this horse again
4. Either put up better fencing or keep the mare away from the D-a-mn Stallion.
5. Learn some facts regarding founder and its multiple presentations
6. Learn some humility. You're not old enough, wise enough or experienced enough to be arrogant and closed minded.
7. Don't breed this horse again.
8. Get radiographs, and one's done by a competent vet who actually knows what s/he is doing.
9. Understand that saving a horse from the killing floor is not always the best thing to do.
10. Involve your parents in the decisions regarding the care of this and other horses under your stewardship.
11. Understand that regardless of your age, you don't get to tell us what to do. Should we decide not to do as you demand, what are you going to do?
Have a hissy fit? Twirl in circles until you are so dizzy you fall down like a drunk? Refuse to wear underwear for a week? What?
12. Don't breed this horse again.

I thought it was pretty funny too. He must have exposure to teenage girls. I still cannot believe this girls parents are letting her make these sort of decisions.

They might not be horse people, has she said if they are involved with horses or not? My parents had nothing to do with my horse when I was growing up. My dad was too busy and mom was scared of her.

did ya'll see the pics of the horse's feet? Holy smokes, does that look bad. If that's a recent trim job, I'd fire the farrier.

I saw the pictures... and they do look awful... but not knowing what can be done about them, I guess I'm not in a position to judge what can be cut off. Can all that toe be cut off?

...Can all that toe be cut off?

Not all at once. Usually what they do is select a prominent ring that is about one third up the hoof wall from the bottom and start rasping downward there, thinning the hoof wall all the way around, until they start seeing white line where the hoof wall meets the ground and then you stop. You do this every time you trim and eventually you'll get rid of the flare as the hoof grows down from the hairline. That horse also had too much heel, but it was underslung so it didn't look like it. The growth rings were much wider at the heel than at the toe. That's a classic sign of founder too, so her heels needed cutting back as well as the toe. Lots of problems in that poor horse's feet! :o(

Well, I can see it's a foundered foot, I just wondered how much can be done about that at this point, or if it just needs to grow out. Other foundered feet I've seen the front hoof wall had blown off, leaving meaty tissue exposed, so I'd think having that thick wall there is better than that alternative.

I saw the red headed woodpecker again over on the dead tree by the barn! I hadn't seen him for awhile. I tried to get his picture but I spooked him and he took off.

So I went over and took a picture of one of my squirrels instead.

This is where x-rays can be helpful, you can see how much toe you can safely cut off. That horse's feet look embarrasingly bad, I'm glad I'm not the one who posted them on a farrier's forum. The farrier's haven't gotten started good on those pics yet, I'm thinking they are going to have a field day when they see them.

I'm as interested as anyone to see what they say... I just wondered how much of what they look like is really fixable, and how much is because the horse foundered three months ago and that's the kind of deformity that happens.

I'd be completely at the mercy of my vet and farrier. I have no idea how to fix something like that, or make her comfortable for the long term, but I'd imagine she shouldn't have been barefoot three months after a founder, in the first place.

What do George's feet look like? Has he had rotation and deformity like that?

George is a chronic founder and has rotation but his feet looking NOTHING like that. All he has is some founder rings. Merikle's horse has been badly mismanaged. I'll take some pics of George's feet and you'll get an idea of what they should look like. His feet are pretty long, I keep them long on purpose. He's more comfortable that way, but he doesn't have long toes/underrun heels like that girl's horse does.

OK - I'd like to see. I've not seen many founders, just the one who's toes had completely come off and were open. That horse, sadly, was at a sale.

Ok, George's feet don't look great but they look a heck of a lot better than that other horse.

Oh, it's probably been about 2 or 3 years. Once we figured out the problem and put him on meds, we got it under control. He gets pergolide every day for his cushing's.
