This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Now, if you wanted to buy a horse it's probably a good time :~\
Yeah, but I don't want anymore horses at all, ever:)
Here's an interesting article:

That is interesting... I'll never get so serious as to get a monitor, but the table is interesting.
We're going walking now :~)
I'd never get a monitor either, I think that would make me even more obsessive:).
Have a good walk.
Becky
Shoeing bill is a little high on her, but other than that... ;~D
And Bay not looking very stiff :~D That knee that's so bent is the one Marc thinks is the stiffest when he's shoeing him.
I do really well during the day. After 5, is when I want to eat til bedtime. I have set a limit of nothing to eat after 9pm. So far I've lost 2 lbs this week.
I have nights where I want to eat something late, and it's never something appropriate.
fritos with grated cheese
mini milky ways (watchin those calories, you know)
lemon cake
We have those little milky way bars too. :~\
He looks good to me:)
Funny how he protects the mares.
Good morning.

We got just the very edge of the storm...just a few sprinkles. It was beautiful and dramatic to see, though, from our position.
We got some more last evening...not much, but we sure need it.
That's amazing. We ran to town last night around 8:00, just for something to do. We were sitting in our building when the storm went thru. The wind was strong enough to bring down a HUGE branch from one of the trees over in the park, enough rain to fill up the street...how far are you from downtown Bixby, 3 miles???
Here at the house it looked like it stormed pretty good too.
Becky
Becky, have you heard of Azoturia or "Monday Morning Sickness"?
You mean in the horse???
Yeah I have...heard of it anyway, I don't really know the specifics about it.

I cut out the carbs about 3-4 weeks ago and have lost 15 pounds! I wanted to lighten poor Blades load too.
I tried that. Lost too. The horses and the family suffered though:')
I googled it:). I don't think that fits.
But this could be a good discussion point:)
This may be long as I try to explain my theory:)
I got Belle when she was just 3, before I had even heard of CTR's. When I got her I never rode her less then 3 times a week and never for less then 2 hours. When she was 4 I heard about CTR's and decided that is what I wanted to do. That is when I got very obsessive about conditioning, and increased my riding of her alot....Looking back I think I not only conditioned her physically, I conditioned her mentally. IOW's she learned early on that when she was being rode it was going to be for long periods.
I didn't get Harley till we was 4. He had probably at that time never really been rode more then an hour or so at a time, and that not real often, because he was being trained to do barrels. Mentally he was conditioned to only short rides. All the barrel trainers around here believe that when they take a horse out to work them, if the horse does everything right/good you stop, even if the horse has only been worked for 20-30 minutes. IMO, that sets an attitude in the horse that they do not have to work longer then that. IMO, these trainers maybe should stop working barrels, no doubt, if the horse has done good, but I still believe the horse needs to be rode for longer periods then that. I guess it becomes a balancing act...
Since I have gotten him, he hasn't been rode consistently for those long periods because of the problems I've been dealing with and because when I first got him I planned on re-selling him as a barrel horse.
Case in point...a friend of mine, Celia, had a horse that was 5 before she broke him. When she did she only rode him 45-60 minutes at a time for about a year. The first time she took him on trail I was with her. The horse did great, till she hit the hour mark. At that point he started getting really pissy:). It was obvious he thought it was time to quit. He was conditoned mentally for not more then an hour.
I think that is where I'm at with Harley. Even tho I've had him for quit a while now, he has decided he really doesn't like going for the longer periods of time, and this attitude makes him not really fight me to go on, but to appear to gas out, I think a lot of it is his attitude. And then again, he was off for 7 weeks, and without thinking I started him back at 4 straight days and not less then 2 hours. I think that that was just a bit too much especially given the heat conditions I was riding in.
He has a good attitude for the most part, like I said, he doesn't fight it too much, but attitude can affect their willingness to push on, IMO. I think easing back, giving him a break after 2 days of work, will help his physical AND mental state about longer rides.
I don't know if you remember the horse I've talked about, a paint horse that had a weird head throwing problem. I truly came to the conclusion back then that that problem started for exactly this reason. He had never been rode for more then 30 minutes to an hour at a time. I got him and started putting lots of miles on him and he protested and developed a very annoying habit.
I've come to the conclusion, that I probably need to not push so hard...but lordy that's hard, I love riding:)

I'll say it again:)...you all should read the book The Schwarzbein Principle. It's a real eye opener on healthy eating.
In short, it's pretty much a "watch your carbs" diet, but it is not so extreme as Atkins. It's keep the carbs at 15 per meal (which is very doable), and eat all the meat, cheese, butter, sourcream (fat's and protein), and green vegetables you want at each meal.
Now, I did fall of the wagon while my arm was broke, it was so easy to just lay in front of the TV and eat junk:). But I'm back to it, and I'm as amazed this time as I was 2 years ago when I first discovered this book, not only how fast the weight comes off, but how good I feel, how satisfied I feel. You're not always craving something that you can't figure out what it is, so continue to eat trying to get satisfied.
