This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Lookit that blue line coming off that storm between us and fort smith! Is that called an outflow boundry? Heavy winds, I bet.

Well, I've decided to dig in myself. I want to lose weight, if not for me, for Bay. I'm happy with how he's doing this year, and encouraged that he might be able to go again next year, if I keep doing right by him and if I lighten his load.
I'm not gonna get less pudgy by wishin' it so.
I think if I start walking again, and cut out the bread and butter I eat too much of, I'd be well on my way.
I think she's gettin' a gully washer...
Oh yeah? - well I think some rain would be welcome. Hope it's not too bad!
I'm looking on the radar and it might be a little north of her...actually between me and her.
I'm just beggin' for it to come here...it's really rumbling.

Crack on Back Hoof
I have a mare that is normally used for riding.
She has a crack that obviosuly started from and injury to the coronary band prior to purchase. The crack now has a bit of space, and is just getting worse. She is being trimmed every 5 weeks, with a hoof supplement.
We cannot shoe her as it is her back foot, and she is the dominant mare, and it would just be asking for trouble.
Is there any type of filler out there? we would like to use her more often, but do not want the crack to get worse. My farrier has never used any type of fillers, so she is of no help here.
Any ideas?
Do you guys lose power when there's storms like that? Or are the lines buried?
It rained hard here for a few minutes. Just enough to make it miserably humid this evening and tomorrow. Won't help the grass situation.
We do lose power sometime. My electric comes from a different supplier then 2J tho. I didn't loose power today, was just cooking supper:)
Becky
Too bad... I know what you mean about the grass, I'd need rain over at least three days for the grass to even start to turn green.
Good for you....I started working on that same problem this week. Those 7 weeks I was off with that stupid broken arm just ruint me. I'm heavier now then I've ever been other then when I was pregnant. The incentive of being a lighter load for the horse has always inspired me too. Good luck.
Becky
What an idiot:)
Send us link so we can follow.
Becky
Well, we'll see if I can follow up on my own advice :~) I often ~say~ this to myself, especially after I have a fattening lunchy and feel guilty!
I just get the feeling Bay's going to have another year in him (didn't you get that feeling when you were here?) but I can't get any heavier, and he'd be a lot better off if I were significantly lighter. And I'd feel better to look better :~)
I think Bay has more then just another year in him. He looked pretty good to me.
I'm going to give some advise here:)....I think those years could be extended with more exercise....I don't quit agree with you about the more they are used the more wear and tear on joints etc...that wear and tear is going to happen rather you use the horse or not, so you might as well get all the use you can out of them. and IMO, strong muscles make for longer lasting joints, feet, etc...I think more damage is done to horses because of lack of conditioning then from over use.
JMO tho...and I do realize I'm a bit obsessive over horses being fit:)
Glad to know you think so... sometimes I think he looks great, and sometimes he stands out there and looks really old. I know he has to move to feel good, so there has to be a happy medium that's the right amount. I'd like to see him getting some more cardio vascular work in the pasture... non weight carrying, get his heart pumping, kind of exercise every day. If he is just standing around, he isn't doing any good.
I wish there was a horse-crazy kid that wanted to come ride every possible day, light load, around the pasture kind of easy work. That would be really good for him.
And I think we should try to trail ride twice a week till summer's out, anyway.
And speaking of being obsessive about fit horses...:)
I'm not riding Harley tomorrow:\ I think four day in a row right now for him is too much. He did good today, but didn't have the level of energy he did yesterday after a 3 day rest.
I've come to the conclusion that Belle was just a really tough tough horse. I could ride that horse every day for hours, and she was always there. I'm hoping that I can get Harley to that level of fitness, but I need to ease up a bit, and stop comparing him to Belle.
I'll ride him again Thurs. Then he'll be off 3 days again. Hopefully next week I can get in 4 days, but with a break after 2.
Becky
It does sound like Belle was extraordinary, you may never get another one like that!
Any follow up on the massage guy wanting to work with her?
I think 2 times a week with increasing amounts of long trotting, and hills, and slowly lengthening ride time would be as beneficial as running him around the pasture. Unless you keep him going for, I'd say, at least 20-30 minutes your not accomplishing anything as far as cardio vascular improvement. Their heart rate has to go up and stay there for a while for it to do any good. Even at a walk, especially on hills, carrying weight it's a lot easier to accomplish.
Becky
I don't know if she was that way because I DID ride her so much, or if it was just she had so much heart. I'm wondering if a gelding is just not going to have that...
Anyway, no I haven't heard from Kirk. If he's at Robbers Cave I'll give him another price. I'd sure like to see her go somewhere where she has a chance to do something.
Becky
With the hay situation it's just not a good time to sell a horse, no one wants one especially one with a problem....
