The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Remember we were talking about guns the other day? My husband has a new one. It takes a 22 shell. It's a concrete nail gun!

"It's a concrete nail gun!"

Many years ago we had a large metal tank, over 50ft tall and very heavy, installed on a thick concrete pad. One of the guys doing the installation had a 38 cal gun that would drive a stud through a metal plate then into the concrete. When he was through he said that was a waste of time because not much would stop the tank if it fell over. : )

lol. Well, we are finishing up our master bathroom and my husband is building a shower. Talk about an echo when he fires that thing.

At least he is building it on a concrete pad. No termites or other insect damage to worry about. : )

3 foot by 6 foot with a bench :') He was cussing about the plumbing yesterday and said he was going to call a plumber and a tile layer. He won't though.

I wanted to tell you that I worked with white bags yesterday. I did what you suggested and put a treat in the bag. It worked. It was like "where's my bag"? Sarah Lee even stuck her head in one.

That is about the right size. Tile is fairly easy and pvc pipe makes plumbing go quick. I had to call a plumber and electrician right after I got out of the hosp. Couldn't wait until I was well enough to do the repairs myself.

I also worked with a rain coat. You know the only thing that they tense up about? It is the darn fly spray that they have had 100's of xs but act like they have never seen.

Had the same problems and finally gave up and would just pour the liquid on a cloth then rub the horse. There is more than one way to skin a cat, uh, put fly spray on a horse.......

That's too much trouble:') Mine stand there but get bug eyes at first. Sarah Lee can be sprayed tied up. I undo the boy though. He is more relaxed if he feels he can move if he has too. I do put spray on a baby wipe and wipe their faces and ears. They like that. That's their reward and last though.

I haven't worked with a whole lot of things that might be spooky before because I thought it might stress them always having stuff popping up but mine seemed to be curious and like we were playing a game. I always thought that they were happiest and secure in the pasture but I'm beginning to think they like getting out.

You would think they enjoyed getting the flys off them. The big Dummies. Do you have a fly problem at your barn? Somehow we have managed to keep them under control the past couple of years. We are using the plastic bags with a scent that attracts the flys inside. They cannot get out and die inside the bag. Works good so far.

They prefer to be out of the pasture and with other horses. Going on a trail ride with lots of other horses and riders just makes their day.

Funny, I guess I've had it in my head that it is for us and they tolerate it but look forward to getting back to the farm. Maybe, I got that from them always wanting to walk faster coming back than leaving:')

Golden Malaran (sp?) works well too. Just sprinkle it on flat places that the horses or other animuals cannot reach.
