The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Are you anywhere near Burton, OH?

Yes, about 30 miles Southeast of there. We show at the Geauga County Fairgrounds quite a bit in the Geauga Horse and Pony Association.

I thought that was your neck of the woods. I don't have the appt scheduled yet but we're going to be bringing Deuce there for surgery at Equine Specialty Services. Our vet recommends them highly and most that I know have had a good experience there. My trainer had a bad one but he can be so over the top fussy that it doesn't exactly suprise me.

so the trailer does not wind up in a ditch.

My turn for a story. This was back in 1986 on Memorial day weekend, we had traveled to Hocking Hills for a weeks vacation and trail riding. All decked out in our brand new Ford dually, towing behind a brand new Lazy N 3 horse slant with a 14' living quarters. We had stayed at a private campground for a few days and wanted to move to the State forest campground for the rest of the week, after the weekenders had left. The rig was quite long and the dirt road has sharp bends. My husband made a right turn a little too close on a hairpin turn and the trailer almost went over the hill!

Out in the middle of nowhere and we could not get anyone on the CB. This was before cell phones or OnStar..lol We manage to dig out the tail gate and get the horses out. There was no way to get to the tack room to get a saddle or bridle, so my husband had to hoof it up to a house about a mile away. A tow truck arrived and he had to hook up to the side and pull the trailer back on the road. It's a good thing that truck held that trailer on the road. Thank goodness for goosenecks. We would have lost everything over that hill.

Is that at an Arabian Breeders place? We took our QH there for x-rays once. If so, they are brothers and show Arabians and have the vet clinic there.

Good grief what a close call!

Those long trailers on tight turns ~shudder~

Ours is pretty short, but you know we still have to swing wide to ensure it doesn't cut the corners. Our fear is often just the width of the trailer going down the road, it's wider than the truck, and I always get the sensation that we don't fit in the lane. I tend to hug the centerline until big trucks come, then I feel pretty squeezed and I watch my right mirror to see if I'm still in the lane. We have a couple bridges where the abuttment is right at the right hand line, I hate passing oncoming traffic there.

I don't believe they're arabian folks. It's Dr William Jackson and I believe his wife is also a vet. I had heard the place was under different ownership about 10 years ago so maybe it was the same place. The pics on their website definitely don't have the look of a vet clinic to me.

Before I moved, I used to have to haul the trailer across a mile and a half long 2-lane bridge on top of the dam, every time I went anywhere, and it was NOT fun to meet a tractor/trailer on that thing. But at least they know EXACTLY where their trailer is and usually don't crowd you. The worst thing was meeting another nervous yahoo pulling a boat who didn't know how big his boat was and wanted his lane and part of mine too. There were several time I thought I was going to lose a fender or a mirror. Talk about having your butt draw up!

Good morning, I looked at the IHC rims on the trucks this morning. They are 16 inch two-piece rims, the dangerous ones that tire stores usually refuse to repair.

Also wanted to let you know that I am having problems trying to walk, again. Every step I take is a real drag and the crutches just get heavier every day. Yep, these kittens are practicing their Siberian tiger impressions. Each one will latch onto the rubber tips of my crutches and hold on for dear life. They have gained weight and grown in size to the point it is difficult to drag them along.

Darn cats. : )

I hate to hear about your walking problems. Be careful around those kittens with your crutches. I'd hate for them to make you fall and break something. That's all you need in addition to everything else! Do the doctors know what the problem is this time?

The kittens are the problem. My walking is alright except when I have to drag them along. They refuse to let go...... : )

LOL, that's what I thought you meant, but after Frogs question I wasn't sure:)

Glad your problem isn't too "serious", altho, do be careful they don't cause you to fall.

So, do you think you are going to have Cyn shod?

Just back from my ride this morning. Lots of hills again. We did 2 hours and 40 minutes, I was shooting for 3 hours...Nikki screwed me up. I was out clear by the creek and look back and there she is. I had to bring her back, she just can't make it too far. That just messed my timetable up...

Thanks! I am doing much better. These kittens are growing very fast. This is the same two kittens that I tried to get Hair to take. I was afraid to offer them to Frog as her husband would make her sleep in the barn if she brought any more cats home.

When I turned 16, my dad said ok, now "you" can haul to the horse shows... lol Rigs are a lot better now, but it is still frightful to haul. I have had too many people pull out in front of me. Even with the fifth wheel and nothing live back there, I still am so very cautious.

I dunno.... would you? If she were doing like she did on the trails as we usually ride them?

He'll find her more worn down than usual this time, so we'll see. If we did that 15 every week we would, but unless and until we start doing 15s and 20s regularly or faster, we'll probably leave her be. We're always in "we'll see" mode with her.
