The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

He's already lost quite a bit of weight since I've had him confined to the dry lot and been giving him only a measured amount of hay each day. He even fit in the 2-horse trailer the other day when I took him to the vet's. Hopefully this'll get his insulin levels under control and his feet will begin to grow in more healthy and he'll quit having this laminitis problem.

...he's very coy about being on the furniture...

My cat, the one I got from Inge_Cav, is that way about getting up on the counter top. He KNOWS he's not supposed to get up there, but he'll get up on the bar stool and hang his head over, then he'll wait 'til you turn your back and the next thing you know, you turn around and you're looking him in the face and he's got this "Who ME?" look on his face. The little booger. I think Cav taught him some bad habits! ;o)

It was the principle of the thing last night -- being miffed at having to sleep in a crate.
Oh of course! :-) My dog gets miffed if you try to lock him in a room for a couple of hours. Nevermind a crate! He actually goes nuts if you try to crate him... goes into a complete panic. The lady that had him before us was out all day and night and left him in a crate 24/7. She was going to put him down because the neighbors complained of the barking.

Well, we crate trained her as a puppy, and she needs to use it when we're out during the day (otherwise she and the cats would wreck the house) and when we're at an agility trial or hunt test. Although at the hunt tests I can stake her out under a nice shady tree and she enjoys that a lot . . .

But I don't like to leave her in a crate during the day AND at night - just isn't fair. But I work at home two days a week, and when the kids are home they have her out too. So she hasn't spent a lot of time in the crate this summer!

Oh heck, my cat gets up on the furniture whenever she wants to, and just flips you off with her tail if you yell at her. Oddly enough, she's pretty good about staying off the counters, but everything else is fair game. She likes to clean house and knock everything off the shelves. There's never much on the kitchen table, so I think that's why it doesn't interest her.

Somebody ought to lock HER up in a crate 24/7 and see how SHE likes it! Some people just shouldn't have pets period!

We have a nice shady back yard, and we put up a zip line for my dog that goes from one end of the yard to the other. However, he doesn't get the concept, and will just go to the end of the lead in whatever spot it happens to be in. And if you call him, he'll just bark at you frantically like "I can't I want to, but I can't! He's pretty smart in every other aspect except for that one thing.

Tell me about it! He was one screwed up pup when we got him, but he's improved loads with regular family interaction and attention. (She even had him on doggy prozac.)

LOL! Yeah, I've seen that look too, and cats are so GOOD at it. Of course, mine doesn't have a tail to flip you off WITH, so I don't get that from him. He just sits there and gives me the innocent look...until I get out the squirt bottle...and then he can't get down from there fast enough.

Oh Jeez! That's like these people who put their kids on Ritalin just for being a normal, rambunctious kid. It's just stupid!

All I have to do is call the dog. They get along but she's still terrified of him. All I do is call "Zooooey!" And she gives me a "You wouldn't dare!" look. Then he pops his head around the corner, or comes into the room, and Zoom! she's outta there. She knows his name even when she's sleeping. It's a horrible psychological thing to do to a cat, but honest to god, it's the only thing that's affective.

OOOO, so sorry about the hay. Have you talked to Tiff, are her horses eating it?

I didn't ride this morning. I looked at my house and decided I needed to straighten it up a bit, and JP was coming to play in the late morning. He's gone home now, and I'm tired. Glad the house is pickup. I'm crashing for awhile:)

Tomorrow morning is suppose to be cooler, so I'm hoping to get started by 7 and have a very good ride.

Hope your ride tomorrow goes well, and you get started on time:)

Becky

Naw - I probably won't mention it to Tiff unless she brings it up, I don't want to insult her and her hay bargain, and she'll probably think I'm being too snooty and picky and when the horses get hungry enough, they'll eat it. :~)

I'm back from getting some new... 2nd cutting orchard grass looks almost blue. You can see the deep piles of all the crap hay I fed this morning.

Oh - and Bob came by and said he's not riding with us tomorrow... he has to put up road signs or something else. He's having us ride with someone else.. a retired veterinarian I guess.

And we may or may not have to ride sweep. Gotta be flexible where Bob's plans are concerned :~)

LOL! I will admit he has a climbing ambition but his sister would take the cake, literally. She likes to take a nip or two of anything that might be food. At least he would get down if you yelled at him but not her.

I managed to catch the last kitten without a tail. It is proving to be a tough nut to crack/tame. Don't know if it is a male or female yet but it looks like Lil'B. The runt turned out to be an oddball. It is kinda ugly but not shy around me. It and it's mama eat their food at my feet each day. I hope to tame it without having to use the trap.

My cat loves biscuts. But she insists on sampling each and every one.

Like sister like brother! He likes to sneak a sip of the froth Lee makes for his cappuchino when he's not looking, and he seems to have a thing for coconut too. I made a coconut cream cake not too long ago and he'd drive you crazy trying work his way around you so he could get to your plate. And you should hear him talk to me when I'm deboning a Wal-Mart rotisserie chicken. It sounds like he's speaking 15 word sentences with all the little chirps squeaks and trills. He's definately a character.

Now that hay looks GOOD. I never get hay that looks that green around here. Of course all I ever get is bermuda, so that's probably the difference.

Huh - I think of Bermuda as a lawn grass, so I'd have thought it was green.

This stuff is almost too green, but they're lovin' it. I bought some of this, and some feed store local that they had been on before this stuff of Tiff's... Thought I'd alternate, feed this blue stuff morning and the blander local at night.

Third cutting orchard grass is a little more balanced, a little coarser and has the seedheads on it. That's the stuff that's better to stock up on for winter.
