This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Do they show in the 4-H divisions, or the Open divisions?
~chuckling at forgetting the boots~
She's young, she can take it.
RE the easy 'steps'.... How do you get it back off of there after you get on? Bend down and remove it? That sounds iffy with an antsy horse at the start of a ride. I like the horn one because at least it's easy to take off and stow again once you're up.
Or do you just leave it there? I'd think it could get snagged on things, with bad results.
Just back from my ride....man it's hot today, and humid...We did mostly hill work today, that kept us by the creek. We stopped an cooled off in it a few times.
I use ditches alot too. I can mount from the flat ground, but it's a job:). Luckily there is no shortage of rocks around here, and even just a few inches makes a world of difference...Harley is about 15.2, I think he's at the limit of what I can do.
Good morning:)
Becky
I think you just have to bend down and take it off. I've never paid attention to that aspect.
Becky
Oh, I hope she makes it without too much discomfort.
Becky
She's young, and skinny -- but her pack must weigh 40 pounds. Poor kid . . . I carry 40 extra pounds around all day, I know what it's like! < g >
Well, from a practical standpoint, getting the thing off an English stirrup would be easier than Western, (At least you can bring the stirrup up instead of bending over so far) but I still see getting the thing off of there as a fairly risky operation right after mounting, especially at a trail head where the horse is excited anyway.
I'd rather find something to stand on to give me a boost, so that when I'm up, I can get in the stirrups and secure in my seat ASAP. I wouldn't want to have to sit with one foot out of the stirrup, bending down, both hands dealing with this gadget, all while getting my horse to stand still.
But maybe that's just me and my fidgety horse....
You're back from a ride and I just got around to feeding breakfast :~)
I've been posting on the farrier forum this morning on everything from farriers being too rough on horses to barefooters :~)
RE horses....
They're liking the loose salt now... I'm finding the feed pans not just empty but ~licked clean~ when I go out to feed, and I don't think it's just the pony doing it.
They just had to get used to it, they don't like change.
Well that's pretty much how I feel about them too, mostly because I don't think I could even bend over that far:)...even if the horse stood still, I'd probably just topple off head first:)
Good to hear they are eating the mineral stuff. You're right they don't like change, especially with their feed.
Becky
I was wondering just today, what is going on on the NATRC site..., if Kirk is still there, if there is still any discussion about the JZ ride, how I'm going to be received at the next ride:), I probably have a reputation now.
Becky
I haven't been back over there.... let me know if you find something, I'll check it out :~)
I signed back in over there just now...looks like it's back to being one happy family:)
Becky
And probably a reputation as a soft, 'never punish your horse' kind of city slicker, of all the ironies... :~)
I love Dirty Jobs. Oddly enough it comes on right around dinner time. :-) Mythbusters is another one of my favorties.
I don't know if this will work for you, but what I do if I have to mount from the ground is put my stirrup a couple of holes lower, get on, and then readjust. Hasn't failed me yet.
That's also easier English than Western....
The only problem with that is that it makes it harder to clear the saddle with the other leg, especially if you have a cantle bag on there or something like that. Just a thought.
The best thing to do is to teach your horse to 'park out'. My short riding buddy taught her horses and it's really cool. It tends to make them stand still for mounting too, which is an added bonus.
Pony can park out so wide she gets stuck like that... then we'd both be stuck :~D
They will be showing in the 4-H divisions. They have to be out of the stalls before the Open classes start. The open classes will not have anywhere near, the 4-H kids. They pretty much lower the qualifications to attend. Now, you can go every year. Before, it was every other year. Also, the kids are judged on a scoring system, not just one show, where just the winner gets to go.
