This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Have you ever watched the show "Dirty Jobs" ? They are doing farriers right now:).
We actually have a chance of rain tomorrow, but the temps are still suppose to be in the 90's. I'll be trying to get up again by 6 so I can be out of here by 8....Better call it a night.
Becky
THey have some cool stuff in their catalog. Have you used them before?
You should search your TV Guide and look for the show Dirty Jobs. The host of the show is being coached on shoeing a horse. It's really funny.
Becky
ecurbh looked for it and it's not in the schedule tonight... maybe it was on earlier??? We'll look for it on later nights.
It's more irritation than worry. I suffer from perfectionism:')
No, I've never looked at it, I just searched for that mounting stirrup.
Becky
Well, since I have a similar build to yours, and I think an even taller horse, I sympathize. It was easy when I was 16 and thin. I could swing up bareback from the ground just by grabbing mane and swinging a leg up, if you can imagine. I think I lost my ability to do that around 35 and as many pounds ago.
Oh, Darn, it was really funny. Do you know the concept of the show.
The host goes around and does jobs that are "dirty"...
He made a shoe, pulled shoes, and nailed one on. The farrier didn't let him trim. I don't know that I would want him nailing one on. At the end he was " talking" to some miniatures, and one came up and bit him...:)
Becky
I have seen the show, so I know we get it, maybe they'll replay it. The nailing is as risky as the trim... I hope nailed them straight! Or they got fixed after the camera stopped :~)
WE have 2 minis around. They don't know they are miniatures though and think like big horses. People go up to them like dogs not knowing what they lost in height they gained in mischievousness.
I'm thinking the farrier got him started on the nailing, and was just filmed driving it in the last little bit:) The funny thing was he had trouble holding the hoof and nailing, and when the farrier was showing him how the horse took a dump and he was worried about the horse doing that again on him:).
I didn't realize it either, when we were watching it that Mack had recorded it earlier, so now I'm not sure what night/time it was on.
Becky
An interesting point, the farrier had made the shoes earlier at his forge. I'd never seen shoes like these. They had a triangular flat piece welded on each side at the back ends of the shoes that came out to the edges of the frog...the horse must have need some kind of heel support. I missed that part, so I'm not sure if they even explained what it was for.

Kids hauled 3 4-H horses to the State fair. They show before the actual fair starts. Ohio has one of the largest State fairs. It has been a few years since I have gone. But, someone has to stay home and take care of the critters.
One that's often overlooked is to lead your horse into a ditch, or to stand uphill. I've found that if I can get uphill of my mare I can get on her from the ground (with a certain amount of huffing and puffing.)
So that's why we couldn't find it... you DVRd it! :~)
Quiet morning here... horses lined up looking for breakfast, I'm sipping coffee.
That's why they make the apprentices practice on feet from the slaughterhouse before they let them nail a real one . . .
True enough... all the logging roads have ditches alongside them. Depends on the hill :~D And how much ooomph I've got left in me. :~)
My farrier's apprentice has been trimming the pony the last few times. It's funny, Mark can trim and reset Bay and trim Cyn before the apprentice is done :~)
The kid's got a nice way about him, the pony likes him. Mark was sortof disappointed she didn't jump around with him or give him much of a challenge. I think Mark had warned him she was a wild one :~)
I dropped my daughter off at college for the "freshman bonding experience" yesterday morning, then headed over to a Big Retrieving Guru who just happens to live five miles from the college (and no, that had nothing to do with my daughter's choice of college . . . I didn't find out until she'd already signed her name on the dotted line < g > .)
He has two young ladies working for him for the summer -- 12 and 14, cute as buttons -- who are natural dog trainers. They have taken several dogs to the Grand already and one of them took her dog all the way through to title her GRHRCH (Grand Hunting Retriever Champion). One of them was featured last month on the cover of Hunting Retriever Magazine, with a big photo spread inside of both girls and their dogs. And they're still both just as nice and sweet as they can be. And the dogs just love them, can't take their eyes off them . . . some folks are born with it. The rest of us have to work at it.
Anyhow, I ran my girl on some land and water marks for the Guru, and she played up splendidly and was perfect in almost every detail (she veered slightly off on the return through a deep bog but corrected on command.) He was pleased to say some very nice things about her . . . her conformation, her straight way of moving, and her exemplary marking. He says she's ready to train for the next level. I can either work at home and bring her periodically, or he will take her for a month. I can't bear to part with her for a month . . . < sniff > so she'll just come up with me when I visit my daughter.
I'm anxious about my girl, they're backpacking and whitewater canoeing -- naturally we had to forget something, and we were in South Carolina before I realized we had left her beautiful, well-broken-in Montrail hiking boots in the middle of her bedroom floor. We stopped at WalMart and got the best fit on the softest pair of well padded suede hiking boots I could find, sure hope they don't gall her feet. She's got thick socks, liners, and a blister kit . .. but of course I'm worried.
The E-Z Mount one on the top is the one I've been thinking about making. All it would take would be two short pieces of metal conduit with a piece of rope run through them and tied. It wouldn't take up much room in a saddle bag either.
