The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I had to get on and off about 4 times today to pick up tools:), it get's harder and harder as I get older and older:).

I always find a rock or bank to stand on, Mia was alot easier, she was shorter, I think Harley grows every day.

Well, I have to use my hands to get my foot high enough for the stirrup...Mounting is a tough part of riding, my suggestion is just do it often..

Yeah, one of those clamps on a long stick. We use them for people who have had hip surgery or have arthritis.

I don't get on from the ground... Not only is Bay too tall and me too um... inflexible? I can't pull that much or I pull the saddle over. On trail if possible I have ecurbh hold my opposing stirrup and that helps. Luckily I ride in timber country where there's got to be a stump not too far down the trail :~)

Thought I'd check in one Bay's rub spot, it's healing nicely, I finally just peeled off the loose skin pieces that were hanging on. They didn't hurt him to take off and there was already new hair coming in underneath so I figgered it was just as well to pull them off. I gave him a bath with some good Iodine soap and scrubbed real well to get all the dead skin and now it looks pretty good.

Before... You can see the big raised (fifty cent piece size) pieces of hide that were dead and gonna flake off...

After, pretty clean looking skin, and the hair coming in has the appearance of all being brown.

That's why I was going to buy that strap and then changed my mind. I was concerned about pulling the saddle over. Doesn't make any difference now though. It looks like they aren't carrying it anymore.

Oh that looks a whole lot better. I guess the stiff pad just rubbed the hair off, then was working on the skin.

It's a sad thing, but it's happened to me too, and I'm sure has happened to most riders. Tack wears out so slow we just don't notice till something like this.

Looks like he will be fine to go mark trails with Bob.?

I think so - I think he'd be good to go this weekend as long as he and the pad I use is really clean! I have some to choose from if my new one isn't here yet. I may show sheen him right there too.

I've seen a few people who used the one here that you hang from your horn:

Right, I forgot you were waiting on a new one....

Well I hope you get to go. Is it still really hot there? That could be bad if Bob is late getting started:)

The bottom one was the one I almost bought. I'm just concerned about my weight pulling the saddle on her wither. A least when I'm on a block I can get things ready and up and over. When I first started someone would hold the right side of the saddle because I was delaying and putting a lot of weight on the stirrup. I'm faster and put my weight on the saddle with my hand now and it stays but with this...hmm I still might try it. I can't dog around though. You would have to get on up. I could still get someone to hold the saddle until I worked out the bugs I guess.

I've never used one and never heard how much it will pull the saddle around. Hard to say. But yes once you commit to mounting you need to get the job done as quick as you can.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, just find a block to stand on when you get on, and on trail rides choose to take breaks at places where you can see there's a good place to get back on. That's what I do. I don't know what your area looks like, but I'd think you could usually find something.
