This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I was scrolling through old posts seeing if I missed any pictures and I saw your comments about fly sprays. Try some Pyrannha, it's cheap and really works well. It's also what also goes in my barn fly spray system and there are no flies in my barn. I use it on all of my horses, except for Tuffy.
Frog, I found something that is working really well for Tuffy's allergies. It's called FlyPel and when I use it religiously, it's keeping Tuffy comfortable. I order it from A to Z Vet supply and buy it by the gallon. It's expensive but I searched around and a to z is the cheapest.
Have a good ride... Muggy here, almost foggy!
Bob called last night, wants us to help him mark trail again for their organized ride. Big surprise huh! It's in two weeks. I was afraid Bay wasn't going to be ready to do the 15, but he only wants to do the 8 and he's seeking someone else to volunteer for the 15. Bay's skin will hopefully be OK by then. I don't know if the new pad will be here, but I've got other clean pads that will work for the interim.
I think I've seen that somewhere before, but you know how it is, there's so many different sprays and you never know if any of them work or not so you're afraid to order them. I'll have to try this one on Grace. So far the Tri-Tec 14 that I bought from Tractor Supply is working pretty good. I've got a gallon of it to use up but I'll give the FlyPel a try when I run out. Thanks!
I like Tri-Tec, too, but it didn't stop Tuffy's itching. The FlyPel hasn't eradicated the itching but it sure put a dent in it.
We did have a good ride:)
I hit the jack pot too. Occasionally you find things out there that people have dropped. I always pick up tools:). Today I found a pair of heavy duty wirecutter/pliers, a regular pair of pliars, a Craftsman rachet with a socket, and an end wrench. There was even a dinner fork, I left it:) They were all in different places too. I Imagine it's the 4wheeler people dropping this stuff. When I got home and showed the stuff to Mack he thinks the rachet/socket and wire cutters are ours anyway, (Men know their tools:)....I saw an old wheel barrow laying out there too that looks just like one we have, I need to go look around and see if mine is missing. The thing is this stuff was pretty far out...
I'm going to have to start leaving Grizzly home tho, especially if I'm not going to be by the creek. He was having trouble. I stopped and found a big flat rock that had a bowl shape indention and filled it with water for him. That at least got him home. I stopped pretty often to let him rest. If he wouldn't go running off after every squirel, lizard and bug that went by, he wouldn't get so hot:) He's just going to have to stay home now, till it's cooler.
Becky
That's the trouble with dogs, they go four times the distance they need to at the start... and blow their wad.
Good finds on the tools... But disturbing if they're really yours in the first place... how'd they end up there?
My wheel barrow is missing....I'm guessing we've been robbed...little creeps. I'd just like to know how they got that thing so far out into the woods. I wouldn't think a wheel barrow would be easy to pull with a four wheeler, and if they walked that far,,,,wow,,,they must have really needed it...I don't know how I can get it back home. You can't get a truck or car back there, and I'm not walking.
Our work shop is not really located in a good spot, even if we are here, it would be accessible to someone who was quiet. I guess we need to start locking it up.
Becky
What else is missing?
I'm so sorry... I hope you don't find that more is missing. When do you think it happened?
And why go to the trouble to take things then drop them in the woods?
I've looked around, but I can't see that anything else is missing, none of the bigger stuff anyway. I have no clue when it happened, I don't use the wheel barrow very often.
Why do it...I'd say they had a 4 wheeler broke down out there and needed some tools to work on it with. My house is the closest one to go to. The wheel barrow I have no clue what they could have needed it for, other then to haul something bigger out there with, then maybe what ever it was they hauled back on the 4 wheeler when they got it going...Where it was, I'd say was 3-4 miles as the trail goes, and the trail is pretty rough..LOL...at least I know they had to be going nuts by the time they pushed that wheel barrow that far. It's very old, very rusted, one handle is very loose making it hard to push, and the front tire has a very very horrible loud screeching noise when it rolls:). I hated the thing. But I hate losing it, it did serve a purpose once in a while:)
Becky
Well if it's that old I agree it'd be easier to get a new one than go retrieve if from that far. They probably just used it to carry whatever else they took. I hope you don't discover something big missing... It's just crappy to be violated like that.
I'm thinking I'm going to pick up a lock for my tack room trailer door.....god, I don't want that saddle taken. My trailer is parked where it would be harder to get to unnoticed if we are here, but getting by with taking little stuff could make them brave, and we're not always here...Taking the saddle would be something I could see being done on a dare if they were feeling brave...
Becky
Oh dear - Yes, absolotely do that.
We have ours padlocked where it is parked... both doors, even the horse door... and we padlock it when we leave it at the trailhead so no one can rifle through things.
I've never locked mine, when I go places I make sure anything of value goes with me, IOW's I don't carry extra saddles, pads, etc. that I would have to leave when I go on the trails.
Becky
It is HOT! It looks like rain working it's way but it's hot. Yesterday was a perfect day to ride. Of course I had to work. I've got to get an earlier start. I really don't want to go back to evenings. I didn't ride very long. The kids getting their nails done. When I left , the ferrier had a fan on the boy and feeding him as he worked. Such a hard life:')
We usually have the valuable stuff with us too, but I don't want anyone 'borrowing' halters and lead ropes, or the shipping boots, or my brushes and things, so we lock it.
Much as I hate it, I think I'm going to start locking mine too....%^$#* people...
That guy behind me that blocked the trails and then opened them back up for me, stopped by the other day and said he was having trouble with the 4 wheelers. He downed some more trees on the trails, but wanted to tell me how to get around. It made for a lot of good step overs, but I don't think it's going to stop the little buggers.
They're ruining it for everyone....maybe when school starts again it won't be so bad, but I'm not trusting them. I'm locking up.
Becky
That's cool about finding the tools, but kinda disturbing that Mack thinks that they might be yours. Sounds like there might be some thievery going on out your way.
Poor ol' Grizzly's gonna hate being left behind but in this heat, I don't blame you. I don't know if dogs can have heat strokes or not but I'd rather not find out.
It's really too bad, even if only a small percentage of people are jerks, they leave a mark.
Good to know the owner is still making things good for you. I agree it'd be hard to stop them, they'll just make a path around.
Yes they can have heat strokes/exhustion. I had one that did:(. I didn't know it at that time, but since have read the symptoms and she had them. She made it home luckily, but since them, I don't take them when I know there is no water around.
He is going to hate being left. He loves going, but I can't carry enough water for the both of us.
Becky
