This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
We're just exhausted from the stress of him taking off... we thought he'd done it again.
You know what spooked him? We got a new sprinkler, the kind that makes a ratcheting sound as it goes around.
The dog's a head case :~)
Can you mix some quiet pony powder in his food? :-p That pup needs his head shrunk! :-)
Homer might make a great case for The Dog Whisperer. We just have no idea what's going on in his tiny little mind.
How much are they?
The mountain rumbling?
This may sound mean but if I was going to keep him I wouldn't keep chasing him. I have fostered strays and some are just roamers, no matter how good home is. If I wanted to keep him, I would chain him up for now and fence him a back yard, with maybe hot wire when I could. That's me though.
I've seen that show and it's pretty neat! If only poor Homer could talk.
He's in a fenced yard that would hold most dogs, and he only runs when we're gone. He gets out through the hotwire in the front, between the yard and the paddock. There's nine hotwires, six inches apart. He goes through it. We're going to replace that with small mesh this weekend.
Last weekend, since we don't trust him to stay in the fence, we left him in the house. He clawed and pushed the screen out. He gets stressed, by gunfire, or other loud noises... and runs. If he's that panicked... he may dig, even if we fix the fence. At this point when we leave, we have to close him in the house and close all the windows.
He didn't do anything wrong today, he just crawled under the house. Maybe it's cooler, maybe he can get away from bugs, it just scared us because we couldn't find him.
Nothing wrong with under the house. What I'm saying is that you may never "fix" him. For his safety when yall leave you may have to chain him.
In the house is fine, so far. We just ~now~ can't leave the windows open.
Poor Homer. Something bad probably happened to him. Some, like Cindy can tell you. Others can't.
Not much
If they are cheap, pick us up a couple and let's try them:')
Oh hey Hair. Joshua and I went to walmart for a mouse. We came back with a place station:')
6 years old and in less than 15 minutes he had it set up. No directions. I think I'll let him look at this double posting problem I'm having:')
Oh , excuse me. He just told me he only specializes in games lol
LOL! Remember he tol J that day to leave his tv alone because he knew how to work it.
Yeah:') I went to buy some games for those things. Nothing fits them. We are watching Toy Story on one of them now.
Ok, I've read thru all the posts and am going to try to respond to all from memory:).
This is just from my experience. I used a fly spray years ago and I "think" it was Premectrin. It may have just been this particular horse, but it scalded her pretty bad between her front legs where she had folds of skin. The directions were to spray every day for so many days then after that only every three days. It supposedly built up and had a residual effect. I took her to the vet when I noticed the scalded spots, and he said it was from the fly spray...
If you all can get a brand called "Pyranha" it is one that I have found works really really well. When flies get really bad here I carry a small spray bottle of it and reapply at times, but it doesn't take much.
I'll have to tell my kids about the roll on kind you all are talking about. They have a really bad time with ticks. Celia used it one summer but it didn't seem to work very good for flies. Never noticed that it worked on ticks tho. I wonder if you could use it on dogs....the dog stuff doesn't work well around here.
Poor Homer, he sees ghosts doesn't he:(? I'm glad he didn't "take off". His behavior is odd, I could understand sort of if he was the only dog you had, but with Gidget there you'd think he'd be OK....good luck with him. I hope since he escaped once from the house he doesn't start digging at the doors or windows when you leave. He may think he could get out again. I still think a crate would be worth a try. Confined in a small area my give him a feeling of security, then once he got use to it he may go there even when he's loose because it "feels" safe when something spooks him...I've known lots of dogs that were crate trained that did that...easier and cheaper then putting up more fence anyway...
We never did get any rain here yesterday, but it never reached the temps they were forecasting and today is suppose to be only 84, then in the low 90's for the next week. I'm watching Tucker today, but after today, I'm going to get back to conditioning Harley for the Sept. ride.
