The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well I'd think it'd be miserable, but the only time she really seemed miserable was when ecurbh and I were trying to hold her feet while the doctor clipped it. That hurt her and she kicked and squirmed and blew half her haircoat all over the office :~)

Other than that, she doesn't obsess on it or anything, I wouldn't have noticed anything was wrong if she hadn't have layed there with 'it' exposed for all to see.

Hope the shoeing goes well, then you can ride your own horse again! I think we're still planning on not riding this weekend, going to put that horse mesh up on the front section where we think Homer got out.

Thanks, if I cant get these pills in her reliably over the next few days, she ought to start looking better in a day or two. There's a topical too, but I think I'll wait till she's laying spread eagle in the lawn again to try that. :~D

Hows your Duece?

They're pretty relaxed in that spread eagle pose. I can pretty much do anything with my cats when they are like that.

Deuce's biopsy put off until Friday. Fedex didn't deliver one of the instruments the vet needed. They're supposed to be delivered today. Vet did say there would be a lot of bleeding after biopsy because mass is so vascular. So he has to stay pretty quiet.

My farrier came yesterday evening and I sure was glad. With all the heat and lack of rain around here, Bob's feet were looking awful even though it had only been 6 weeks since his last reset. He was cracking around all the nail holes and had some good sized chunks gone on the inside of his left hind. It looks much better now.

We've got a big St. Jude ride this coming weekend and I'm glad his feet will be in better shape for that. It's supposed to be "cooler" but it's still going to be miserable. It's also supposed to be stormy. I don't mind if it rains coz we sure need it, but I don't like to get caught out on the trail in a blasting thunderstorm.

Oh dear - I sure hope for the best. How are they going to do the biopsy.... will he be out on his back or standing... do they have to open him up, or can they do it with a big long needle?

Cindy told me about it, and here's an update from CNN: Here I had no idea. I think mostly the cape and the coast are going to get hit. Right now the skies are pretty overcast.

Here's something from weather.com: Here The most it seems that we're going to get are high waves on the coast, and what's going to be affected are Plymouth and the Cape and islands.

He'll be standing. I think it goes on the end of the endoscope but not sure. His breeders told me they looked into this and at least out on the West Coast they are actually removing these masses while the horses are standing.

I'm not sure of the protocol out at OSU but I guess we need to get thru the biopsy first.

BTW - not sure if you're interested in this sort of forum but the forums on www.ablackhorse.com can get interesting. It's not all show stuff and they have threads for many breeds and disciplines.

A couple of times the discussions have turned political and I lost a lot of respect for some horsepeople who look like they might be members over at DU. But for the most part everyone is very nice and supportive and helpful....just like here.

Harley had lost both his back shoes:\ One of them have a good size chunk chipped off, but it's on the outside of the hoof so shouldn't be a problem.

But he's ready to go now...I'll probably ride tomorrow morning, as I'm keeping Tucker Sat. morning.

So if he needs the surgery you will take him to OSU??

Other then the worry for your horse, that is an interesting experience. I took a horse there once who had a broken jaw that healed crooked. The results were not good, but it was interesting to watch/hear the instructors teaching and watch the students take turns examining.

Ping!

FYI, for the Texans in the group, and also for Becky, as there might be a tie to either the Purina Feed, or, more likely whatever they are 'treating' it with for weavils.

Death toll reaches 27 as more horses die of mysterious illness at facility

Three horses boarded at a Brazos County stable and hospitalized after showing symptoms of a mysterious sickness that killed two dozen equines at the facility have died, officials said Tuesday.

The horses were among five being treated at Texas A&M University's Large Animal Clinic. Late Tuesday, two remained in hospital care in "poor to good" condition, said Texas A&M University's College of Veterinary Medicine Dean Richard Adams.

"They are stable, but so were the others," Adams said. "The others slipped down fairly quickly."

The three casualties came on the heels of the overnight deaths of 24 other equines, all of whom were boarded at the Carousel Acres Equine Center and Stable in southern Brazos County. The first horse appears to have become sick about 4 p.m. Sunday and, one by one, another 23 fell ill and died.

Stable owner Beverly Raphel said the eight sick horses left could suffer liver damage. It remained unclear how the sickness may affect two pregnant mares.

"It's just so sad," she said. "I can't tell you how much my heart hurts."

State veterinarians Tuesday continued to investigate the so far unexplained deaths, which local animal health officials described as the most unusual mass horse casualty in recent memory. Though veterinarians have yet to determine an exact a cause, some have pointed to the possibility that the horses' feed was contaminated by a toxin.

Raphel said Tuesday the horses had been given Purina feed, which the stable buys in bulk. The feed was stored in a silo and treated with a chemical tablet designed to kill weevils, she said, explaining that the stable has used the same feed and chemical treatment since 1998. The chemical is not supposed to be harmful to horses, she said.

The feed most recently was treated with the chemical Saturday evening, Raphel said. Three horses were fed Sunday morning, and the remainder were fed later that day. One of the horses was fed in the morning but didn't finish the meal and hasn't shown any symptoms, she said.

Raphel praised the community for the outpouring of support provided to the stable. Still, she said she remained angry and frustrated by the loss and hoped to learn more about the cause Wednesday.

"I know it was an accident. I know nobody did this deliberately. We don't have any enemies that would want to do something like that," Raphel said, expressing gratitude that no other stables had yet been affected. "I am thankful that it didn't happen to anybody else ... hopefully. We may have just had a bad batch."

It's suppose to be 104-5 around here the next couple of days, but then cool off for the weekend here too, with chances of rain.

Is the St Jude ride a benefit ride? How far do they go?

Wow, that is just horrible....That's alot of dead horses. Since no other stable in the area has been affected, it has to be something there, unless no other stable uses Purina.

I'd say this will put that stable out of business even if they prove it wasn't their fault.
