The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Oh yeah, she is alot better:). I don't know if it was the shot for the allergies, or the antibiotics, but she's back to her old self:). Still scratching some, but not as much.:)

Good Morning:), I'm at Jenny's keeping the baby. I'll probably take him back to my house in a bit.

Picture of my great niece, who turns 16 next week :) and Prez - I had already posted that they took two 1st and Grand Champion at the last show. I am pretty proud of them both. Just got the picture taken this week to frame for her for her birthday.

Yes, I will be taking the new horse, Buck. I rode this morning --- worked him out in the round pen first. Rode all over my property. He's going to get a lot of work before the ride and get settled down.

He is really difficult about taking the bit. Throws his head, etc. I was puzzling this morning about how to cure him of it. He was getting more and more resistant the more I tried.

Then I thought of that old adge, whatever they do to resist, make them do it over and over until they get sick of it.

So when he threw his head high, resisting the bit, I put my hand upnder his chin and held his head up as high as I could get it for as long as I could (I was on tiptoe). He wanted to put his head down but I wouldn't let him for quite a long time.

We did that three times, and the problem was solved.

He sure is comfortable!

But you have to watch it at a gallop, asking him to slow down, he'll plant all four in a sliding stop.

You might try him in a bosal.

Heh... It's interesting because they show us maybe clouding over, but I wouldn't believe anything they say that far out. You can't predict NW weather more than 24 hours in advance, if that :~)

You think he's just had bad experiences bitting, or is there a chance it's a dental issue?

Sometimes the head tossers are just really sensitive to having their teeth banged with the bit, I try to be careful about it and they get better.

Or, you could go with a hackamore :~)

Well, I understand that. That's the way it is around here.

We do have chances of rain all next week. Be nice if they get that right:)

The baby is sleeping and I'm having a cup of coffee. Will probably go to town later, after feed time. Mack has to work tonight:\, but is in town now. Since I'll be here all evening alone, I'd better get out for a while this afternoon and go see him.

Well, if we're going to get rain here, I'd rather it be this week before you come!

It would be really abnormal for us to get any rain at all from now till Sept 1. If we get any at all, it won't last, and it will only improve things :~)

Your room is all clean and decluttered (it spends most of it's time as storage for stuff we don't know what else to do with). After tomorrow, it will even have a bed in it! :~)

We're on schedule!

to Hair: Duchess:

I'm going to ask the vet to look at his teeth but the man I bought him from said he had bitting issues.

I think he's going to be over now with the lifting-head truck.

Hair, you are going to Washington State, right? It sounds like a great trip.

I had one hour today where I did not have any paperwork outstanding to the state. I got home from UPS to mail the financial stuff and I had another love letter from the "professor". Oh, well, it's just two little insignificant (to me) things to do , so I guess we are winding down.
