The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Well, I don't know... I'm not familiar with it. She says she isn't feeding much... Don't know how big her scoop is.

Her horses aren't thin :~)

My scoop is a quart sized scoop. Does she ride alot to where they would need all that extra calories, etc? Just curious. People do what works for them.

OH my, I'm sorry for Kat....I don't mind NOT having a QH:). It's the riding I enjoy, no matter what horse:) I just hope it's nothing serious. How old is she?

Strategy is a very good feed, and can be feed alone. In fact that is probably what I would feed if I had pasture or fed hay...

Not having to feed to much is a big advantage, and justifies the price, it's rather expensive, but averages out. I'm just very big on Purina feeds tho. I don't think they can be beat. I've always found you don't have to feed, even as much as reccommended, it's so highly absorbable.

I used to feed the Omalene 100 until I moved, I don't have anywhere in a 25 mile radius that sells it, believe it or not! I liked the Omalene 100 Horse Chow cause it had extra fiber for when your pasture was not so good.

I have been using Horse Chow 100 for about 15 years. It's a complete pellet, so I do not have to feed any hay. I do ration it out over 3 feedings a day. Takes all the guess work out of feeding and money wise it's not any more expensive then hay and feed. With the hay situation that is going on around here the last few years it's given peace of mind that they are getting everything they need.

It's hard to believe you can't get Purina feeds...

Kat's getting up there, she might be 20. Last time I talked to Tiff I told her she should be on a good joint supplement, and that it wouldn't hurt to start Buting her before rides. I didn't get a definative answer today for where she was stiff. She probably just overdid it and needs rest. Not sure how pulling the shoes helps with that. Tiff might be stopping by on her way home, I'll hopefully find out more.

Mia's a nice ride, I think. She's pretty easy going, kind disposition, and hardy. She's Tiff's favorite, and I like her.

Well, if the horse was barefoot for so long and she put shoes on and is no having problems, she just may be thinking that's it...

Personally, I don't know if that could be a problem, unless the horse didn't have much foot to nail to, and now has a nail putting pressure on the white line...

I'm just sorry if this makes things difficult for you, or that you will feel uncomfortable borrowing a horse you're not sure she really wants to lend.

I don't think Tiff has any qualms about loaning Mia or Kat, if Kat was sound. She knows I'll take good care of 'em and that we ride careful. :~D

They ride just about every weekend. And they ride pretty hard when they go.

She's a good friend :~) I'll make it up to her somehow... she goes on a lot of trips, I'm sure I'll be able to horse sit for her.

I haven't been keeping up with the thread lately, Lemondrop, are you in the same place as Barbaro (wherever he is)?

Yeah I know. Hopefully it's nothing. I have an injured hip though. Normally it doesn't bother me but I notice that when it does I bear more weight on the good side and after awhile that one starts to ache.
