That is so sad about the horses. I sure hope y'all get some relief from the weather soon.

I do enjoy having Dawn and Tyler, but whew! I need a break...especially with him coming back in a month. That is going to be a big adjustment.

"I need a break...especially with him coming back in a month. That is going to be a big adjustment."

Wow. :) Dawn and Tyler are, indeed, blessed to have an unselfish and loving mère, grand-mère :)

And now these things remain–faith, hope, and love–but the greatest of these is love. Therefore, let love be your greatest aim..." I Cor 13:13-14

Sheesh. Love W but he is a tough boss. Condi just traveled half way around the world and back. She had talks with angry leaders in and out of war zones, attended an Asian summit and the day she gets back home she has a working dinner with the Boss. LOL. I'll have some of whatever she is drinking.

Love the centerpiece and the china. LOL

The nasty, ongoing saga of Mrs Brooke Astor's care and well-being must surely be the saddest chapter in a life devoted to helping others.

Protégée of Brooke Astor Is Cast as Her Protector in Dispute Over Her Care

For the last year and a half, Brooke Astor, 104 years old and sometimes unaware of much of what goes on around her, has been cloistered within the confines of her duplex apartment perched on the 16th floor of 778 Park Avenue, on one of America’s richest blocks.

She rarely emerged, all but vanished from New York life, remote and unreachable even for many who were once close to her. Some friends wanted to see her. But, according to several of them, they were turned down by a young man they came to call a kind of “gatekeeper,” who explained that Mrs. Astor was in no condition to recognize them.

There has been one notable exception to these polite yet firm denials: Annette de la Renta, who is married to the designer Oscar de la Renta. Every two weeks or so, Mrs. de la Renta made her way into the grand apartment for a visit with the woman who, friends and associates say, had become something of a surrogate mother.

Mrs. Astor’s grandson Philip Marshall has accused his father in a lawsuit of neglecting the grande dame of New York philanthropy and high society, and he has proposed that Mrs. de la Renta be named legal guardian. Whether the courts will grant her that role remains to be seen. A dozen friends and associates have said in interviews over the past five days that she is suited to play it. Indeed, they say, Mrs. de la Renta, with her visits and her vigilance, has assumed the task that Mrs. Astor’s only son, Anthony D. Marshall, 82, has abandoned.

-snip-

Ms. Corbett said Mrs. Astor and Mr. Marshall, the son from her first of three marriages, did not seem to be close. “When I would ask about Tony, she would usually say, ‘Oh please.’ She never said much about him.”

Ms. Corbett said that in the 1960’s or 1970’s, Mrs. Astor objected to her son’s desire to change his last name from Marshall to Astor. “She would not allow it and said, ‘No way,’ ” she said. “Mrs. Astor was a woman of principle, and she thought it was opportunistic and inappropriate.”

-snip-

Friends said that about a year ago, members of Mrs. Astor’s staff began calling Mr. Rockefeller and Mrs. de la Renta because they were worried about her care and comfort. Philip Marshall was getting similar calls, they said, and he contacted the two of them.

“David Rockefeller and Annette really are Brooke Astor’s guardian angels,” said John Fairchild, the retired publisher of Women’s Wear Daily and a friend of Mrs. Astor’s for about three decades.

I finally got some of our pictures downloaded, but I had to take them and get disks made and transfer them to the computer. It took forever. And I don't have any of my editing functions working, so they're not as good as they could be. The best one was the one we had made at the Titanic Museum, but this POC computer won't cooperate with the scanner any more either, so I can't scan it in. Anyway, here's a couple of them.

Tyler really enjoyed the Go Karts at the place just down the street from us. This is Tyler (on the right) and the kid from hell his friend, Austin (my friend's grandson).

.

Dawn is really into "rubber duckies" these days. She was thrilled to find this nice, big one at the Toy Museum.

Looks like the Prez is still Good-to-Go.

Bush in good health but gains weight
Caren Bohan, Reuters

President George W. Bush said on Tuesday he had gained four pounds (2 kg) because of "too many birthday cakes," but said he was feeling fine after his annual physical.

Bush, who turned 60 on July 6, was found by doctors at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda to be in the superior category of fitness for a man his age.

"I'm doing fine. My health is fine. I probably ate too many birthday cakes," Bush said.

The nearly 6-foot (1.83 meter) Bush weighed in at 196 pounds (89 kg), up from around 191.6 pounds (87 kg) last year.

A fitness enthusiast, Bush rides his mountain bike several times a week and also does elliptical training, free-weights, stretching and low-impact workouts on a treadmill.

Mountain biking became his favorite sport after he had to give up running three years ago because of knee problems.

Bush's body mass index is 26.6 under a formula used by the National Institutes of Health. A BMI of 25 or above is considered to be overweight though the index does not account for extra muscle mass.

"The president remains in excellent health and fit for duty. All data suggest that he will remain so for the duration of his presidency," a summary of the report from his doctors said.

Bush's high level of fitness put him in a greater than 99th percentile category for a man of 60-64 years old, the report said.

The exam found a precancerous lesion on his left arm caused by sun damage. It was removed with liquid nitrogen. The team of doctors led by Bush's personal physician Dr. Richard Tubb recommended that the president use sunscreen and wear wide-brimmed hats.

Bush has had some mild hearing loss and seasonal allergies but neither condition was deemed a problem in the latest exam.

The president's resting heart rate was 46 beats per minute, well below the average of range of 60 to 85 and consistent with someone in very good physical shape.

His blood pressure was 108/68 and his cholesterol was 174, both normal levels. His cholesterol level was down from 178 last year and the doctors said Bush had a "low to very low" risk of heart problems.

Bush, who celebrated his birthday at a Fourth of July dinner at the White House, was given a total of seven cakes during the week he turned 60, according to White House spokesman Tony Snow.

Asked about Bush's weight gain, Snow said, "My guess is he's determined to lose it."

Last year's physical exam found that Bush had lost eight pounds (3.5 kg) after his weight had crept up to 199.6 pounds (90.5 kg) in December 2004, an increase he blamed on the presidential campaign that year.

Bush met with U.S. soldiers at the hospital and awarded seven of them with purple hearts.

Another fine reason to love the Great Lakes region.

Besides the hot, flat, ugly, humid, alligator infested, voter challenged wastelands......

I thought so...and the flying monkeys was a nice touch. You can't really see them in the picture.

"Is she your height?"

Ummmm...well, I guess you could say that....if you add a few inches. She's towered over me since she was about 12.

Towered?

So she's 5'6"?

BQ.....now that's "towered".......

How's the new job and place doing? I gather you will have your grandson for a little while. That ought to be both challenging and fun.
