A snowpack is the snow that gathers over the course of a winter or snow storm.
In the desert, it's important, because rain water runs off too quickly, and doesn't get absorbed well. Most of the rain we get actually falls as snow and it gets a chance to perculate into the ground instead of run off into the Great Salt Lake or down some river to be used in swimming pools in Los Angeles.
