This was when I was young and very poor. I could barely afford the $5.00 garage sale TV. Even if someone had given me a VCR I couldn't have afforded to buy tapes for it.
(There is something wrong with that last sentence but I am too punchy to figure out what it is.)
This is essentially the vision I had for my version of a flying saucer.
I imagined a central galactic empire sending out thousands of sub-light ships for exploration, simply based on magneto-gravitics.
Being less comfortable with the possibility of ftl drives, I have used only two types in my stories.
Work...the curse of the drinking class...;o]
He has turned out to be quite a talent in a lot of ways, and he is generous, as well. He's one of my favorite actors.
Is that only on Sci-Fi Channel?
Are you up in the night again? What ice cream are they inventing that makes you keep such long, strange hours?
A central galactic empire is plausible with subluminal craft - the stars in the Bulge are a fraction of a light year apart from each other.

I think the hyperspace theory of Babylon 5 is a possible alternative to warp drive - quite possible that there is a higher plane of space-time.
Not to mention the fact that he's an unapologetic retro-male!!
I think so.
All faster than light drives involve some form of hyperspace, subspace, or a higher plane of space-time.
Heinlein developed one that went sideways through hyperspace.
As far as I'm concerned, there is nothing wrong with being "retro-male." I admire a man who is not afraid to say what he thinks, is wise enough to know when to say it, and tender enough to apologize for errors.
I can't stand wussy men. But I don't want butt-heads, either.
Ah.. that is true - wormholes, for example, are considered as bridging hyperspace.
Heinlein developed one that went sideways through hyperspace.
Cosmic-crab drive? ;)
Neither wimps or barbarians!
Essentially. It allowed time to pass in one universe while it remained static in another.
By the way, I need to amend this statement: "All faster than light drives involve some form of hyperspace ..."
I should have said most. I just invented a system of faster-than-light "drive" based on mathematically inverting the Universe.
Similar to Q's "just change the gravitational constant of the universe", it involves making a "map" of the Universe, exchanging the map for the Universe, adjusting your position, and then switching back. Presto! -- You're in a different place!
Ok Mom and Pop actually sold the business about ten years ago and since then it has been under three different managements with the last owner currently in jail for some extremely creative bookkeeping but some how when I put it that way we don't sound that evil.
Anyhow I have to split my time between my current job and setting up the accounting department in our new acquisition. That means that Monday and Tuesday I am about five hours north of here and will be doing this commute for at least another two months.
I hate being on the road like this.
Ah.. it's a variant of the Twins Paradox, though probably in reverse, if I'm reading that right.

Hmmm... could work.
Awjeez, Teddy...no wonder you're so raggedy in your posting. Poor baby! *hugs* I hope the work load eases soon.
No, it has nothing to do with the twins paradox, thank God! (People get so confused over that!)
It's just two Universes that exist at right angles to each other. Time in one Universe is a scalar value in another. It's very handy if you can switch back and forth beween them.
Check with Heinlein. He's the one with the glib explanation.
Howdy Monkey Face.
Little Ms. Jackie and I had to return another errant pooch home today.
Wasn't hard. His mom was out looking for him.
It is true most young men seem to be going to one extreme or the other.
