I'm not religious, but agree that the Bible is a good choice.
But as to fiction, how about "All Quiet On The Western Front?" by Remarque? I think that could very well help prepare kids for hard times. Reading it woke me up when I was about 14.

Agree with Wilder, Narnia, etc. There is also a book for young conservatives that's been out for a few years.

I'm not sure what you mean by fast. The new DVD doesn't even come close to telling the whole story. The only movie that does the entire story justice is the one the BBC and A&E did and it lasts five hours.

In enjoyed a lot of Heinlein over the years. Sometimes, his hostility to spirituality got annoying, though.
I loved the Secret Garden movies (both of them) and just bought a used book for MYSELF.
I bought a Bible especially for teens for my granddaughter and she really liked it. They're about $14 in Walmart's. I also loved the Nancy Drew mysteries and the Bobbsey Twins when I was young.
I THINK it's James Dobson's ministry but not 100% sure, but they have a monthly magazine for teens that's wholesome. You might look into that and she could get one every month for about the same price as good books. M
It consists of Mutiny On The Bounty, Men Against The Sea and Pitcairn's Island.
Perhaps not normal fare for a 12 yr old girl. It has elements of good vs evil, overcoming daunting challenges, survival and justice.
