I loved the Narnia series when I was that age, still do infact.

Anne of Green Gables perhaps?
May be a little too young? Not sure, and it's certainly not a literary gem...LOL But nancy Drew and the spinoffs from that series for fluff reading.
I think a lot of those classics are worth the time. But it really depends on the specific kid's interests and reading level.
