Why Should We Stop THE DA VINCI CODE?
MovieguideĀ® ^ | May 19, 2006 | Dr. Ted Baehr

War on Christianity has been declared. On which side of the battle line will you stand?

The movie version of Dan Brown's book, THE DA VINCI CODE, is now in theaters. Although the movie significantly waters down the unrelenting, anti-Christian attacks and virulent paganism and goddess worship of the novel, it promotes the book and contains enough falsehoods and scurrilous conjecture to distort the truth about Jesus Christ, the Bible, Christianity, and God. That, coupled with the book’s popularity and some Christians’ ignorance about their faith, leads us to believe that the movie, and the attention it draws, will increase people’s hatred and prejudice against Christians and Christianity.

If this sounds like an overreaction, consider this:

* THE DA VINCI CODE presents blasphemous fiction as fact in a deceptive fashion

* THE DA VINCI CODE book denies the divinity of Jesus Christ, claiming He was no more than a mortal prophet, and the movie says it doesn't matter whether Jesus was divine or not

* THE DA VINCI CODE alleges Jesus married Mary Magdalene with whom He had a child

* THE DA VINCI CODE falsely claims the Christian church has historically hidden these “facts” through deception, murder and conspiracy

THE DA VINCI CODE novel has already caused great harm. Over 45 million copies of Dan Brown’s book have been sold, and it’s been a staple on worldwide best-seller lists for two years and counting. Brown, however, doesn’t present it as an overt work of fiction. A simple statement in the prologue reads, “All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents and secret rituals in this novel are accurate.”

Many Christians are already theologically malnourished; how will they withstand the assault of distortions, lies and bigotry from THE DA VINCI CODE?

We must combat THE DA VINCI CODE’s attack on Jesus, the Bible and the very integrity of the Christian faith.

On which side of the battle line will you stand?

Note: See the News and Articles sections of www.movieguide.org for more analysis of Dan Brown's book, and see Current Reviews at www.movieguide.org for a review of the movie version.

You know... honestly.... I don't think this movie will turn any christians from the truth. I do think it will weed out a number of the tares from the wheat.

Who hauled him into court. I thought he was in court for stealing ideas from Holy Blood, Holy Grail, not for attacking Christianity.

If you believe that the bogus charges of the court case - stealing ideas - wasn't a red-herring, you do believe in fiction.

He wasn't charged with plagiarism - and anyone in the literary world knows that ideas cannot be copyrighted...exactly the judges judgment.

It was a ruse in the far hope of getting a judge who would comply and ban the book and the movie.

Oh thanks, I'll have to look and see if that works.
Where can I get the "Webster's Special Edition Da Vinci Code Decoder Book?"

Exactly - why is the thought that Jesus may have been married - why is this idea so repugnant?

That's not the main problem with the book. The main problem with the book is the lie that the doctrine of the divinity of Christ was invented in the 4th Century as a political power play.

Actually, I'm not sure that he really has said that it is a work of fiction. And that's the problem.

Ahhh - usually when a book is sold as fiction and listed in the fiction section of libraries and bookstores, it's accepted as fiction - Most people don't have a hard time understanding that...

Besides most of the Blasphemous attacks were based on historical fact

Muhammed really did have a bomb in his turban? Give it a rest.
It's a double standard. Chritianity = untouchable
Islam = Open Season

But when I purchase a book, I usually don't have to contend with the author trying to convince me that he actually wrote it to try to make me a better human being. Most authors don't try to invent altruistic motives for writing and publishing books. Your entertainment and their profit is usually the accepted (and unspoken) reason. If Danny is sincere in his statement, he can go ahead and continue to bless mankind by donating his profits to some religious think tank somewhere

Well. there's one of the most convoluted and tortured posts on the thread yet

They ain't' HIS ideas.

I first heard about this "Mary Magdalene" conspiracy thing over 30 years ago, from some whackjob in Seattle who was convinced that the Gospels were all written by some Roman guy named Gaius Calpurnius Piso. I'll bet he is ticked that Dan Brown doesn't mention Piso even once in "The Da Vinci Code."

Dan Brown is also being sued for plagiarism from the authors of another book, "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" who claim that he ripped off their book.

I apologize if I didn't express myself in the best possible manner. I'll try to do better in the future.

Please let me know what you had trouble understanding, and I will try to explain what I was trying to say.

Muhammed really did have a bomb in his turban?

You mean 911 and countless other terrorists attacks were not done because of Muhammed teachings? Besides, your moral relativism, equating Christians criticizing with actual attacks and serious threats is beyond pale.

If you carefully hold the book under a 60 watt bulb and stare intently at its cover, you can see a secret message printed just below the title. It reads -- "A Novel" -- which, when run through the "Webster's Special Edition Da Vinci Code Decoder Book," translates to -- "a work of fiction

How dare you point out that their fiction about Brown not acknowledging this as fiction is fiction! ;o)

Brown has been somewhat clear he believes this theory.

and so he joins countless thousands of others over 2000 years - including contemporary writers - even a best selling lifelong Catholic -

wanna stay in a safe cocoon, DO NOT read my posts # 102 and 111

I could care less about being in a cocoon or not. But when people lie, I will call them on it. Especailly when the lie is going out to millions of people. I am not advocating banning Brown, so I really don't see your point.

If I wrote a novel about a real person and portrayed that person as a pedophile (which he was not), and covered my slander up under the guise of my story was just fiction, would that be OK?

obfuscation: to make something obscure or unclear, especially by making it unnecessarily complicated - or - about as convoluted as any post here

I read your posts #102 and 111 when you first posted them.

Your opinion of them seems somewhat........ overrated.
