from their website...

What is the pricing for Text Messaging?
All Cingular customers with Text Messaging-capable phones are pre-activated to send and receive messages at $0.10 per message with no monthly charge. Or, you can sign up for a more economical Text Messaging package.

here is the link to the fee info for your cell provider...

http://www.cingular.com/media/text_messaging_faqs#faq8

but I am not sure if there is an additional charge for it since it is AI. Ryan always says something about it during the show.

I have Verizon and it costs 25 cents, but I am not sure about additional fees for AI text messaging, so I never do AI text messaging.

I found this for you...

So if you do not pay a monthly fee for unlimited text message currently, then you can still use text messaging but you will be charged 10 cents for each one you send and 10 cents for each one you receive.

Voting by Cingular Wireless Text Messaging on your wireless phone - What is Text Messaging/ SMS?
Text Messaging – sometimes known as SMS (short messaging service) - is a way of communicating short messages via your wireless phone. Most (but not all) handsets have this feature. For American Idol, only Cingular Wireless customers can vote by text message using their wireless phone keypad to write the message VOTE and sending it to a contestant number. This 4 digit contestant number, such as 5701, relates directly to your contestant of choice and will be displayed on the show. Only send the word 'VOTE' to the 4 digit numbers you see on screen, you cannot send a text message to the toll-free numbers.

How do I vote using Cingular Wireless Text Messaging?
As with the toll-free voting, each contestant will also be assigned his or her own Cingular Wireless text message number during the show – this 4 digit short number will appear on your TV screen alongside the toll-free phone numbers. To vote by text if you are a Cingular Wireless subscriber, simply watch American Idol on FOX each week, input the word VOTE into a new text message on your cell phone and send this message to the 4 digit short number assigned to your contestant of choice (such as 5701 for contestant 1). Only send the word 'VOTE' to the 4 digit numbers you see on screen, you cannot send a text message to the toll-free numbers. If done correctly, you will receive a message confirming your vote. You will receive a message confirming your first valid vote during the voting window regardless of how many contestants you vote for, or how many votes you cast.

Cingular Wireless text message voting will open at the end of each performance show and stay open for at least 2 hours, subject to local time zone limitations. Voting will NOT be open during the show or outside the foregoing two hour time period determined by the area code on your wireless phone. Votes sent outside of the voting window will be invalid, and you will not receive a confirmation message. If you are sending your text vote from a wireless phone with an area code that is in a different time zone from that in which you are calling, the network will accept or reject your vote based on the time zone of your area code. So, if you have a New York cell phone area code but are voting from Los Angeles during the West Coast voting window, your vote will not be accepted. Try calling the toll-free number from a land line during the West Coast vote window instead.

Is the Cingular Wireless text messaging vote system the same as the toll-free system?
The design of the text voting is exactly the same as the toll-free voting system in terms of open/close times. The contestant numbers will also be very similar. If you wish to vote for contestant 2, for example, you can either call 1 866 IDOLS 02 (1 866 43657 02) OR Cingular Wireless subscribers can text the word VOTE to 5702. Please make sure you watch the show to find out the right numbers each week. Only send the word 'VOTE' to the 4 digit numbers you see on screen, you cannot send a text message to the toll-free numbers.

Who can vote using Cingular Wireless Text Messaging?
Text message voting is only available to Cingular Wireless subscribers with two-way text messaging capable handsets. If you are a Cingular Wireless customer and wish to check if your handset has two-way text messaging capability, go to www.cingular.com or visit a Cingular Wireless store. Cingular Wireless subscribers with area codes from within Continental US, Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico can cast their text vote for American Idol. If you are not a Cingular Wireless subscriber, you can vote using the standard toll-free phone numbers instead.

When can I vote using Cingular Wireless Text Messaging?
Voting for American Idol opens after the performance show each week and will stay open for at least 2 hours, subject to local time zone limitations. Votes cast outside of this voting window will be invalid. Only send the word 'VOTE' to the 4 digit numbers you see on screen, you cannot send a text message to the toll-free numbers.

This season, for the first three weeks of American Idol voting (first vote is Tuesday February 21, 2006) there will be two performance shows a week for you to vote on – Tuesday night will feature the girls and Wednesday night will feature the boys. After the Tuesday night show, you can vote for any of the girls who performed. You will have at least two hours after the show to cast your vote before lines close and no more voting for the girls will be accepted. After the boys perform on the Wednesday night, the lines will then open and you will have a chance to vote for any boy contestant that performed that night. You will have at least two hours after the show to cast your vote before lines close and no more voting for the boys will be accepted. Again, during the show you just need to note the number of the contestant you want to vote for, and then call or text after the show is over. At the end of those first three weeks of voting, we will have a Top 12, consisting of 6 boys and 6 girls and voting will then only take place at the end of each Tuesday night performance show.

How do I know my vote has been counted?
Your message will have been counted if you are a Cingular Wireless subscriber and text your vote during your valid voting window and receive your confirmation message, unless your handset says ‘message not sent’. You will receive only one text confirmation message each week, regardless of how many contestants you vote for, or how many times you vote that week. If you are calling the toll-free numbers to cast your vote, your vote will count if you hear the ‘thanks for voting’ message.

How much does it cost to vote via text message?
The cost of voting for Cingular Wireless subscribers varies depending on your Cingular Wireless Text Messaging Package. If you do not have a Cingular Wireless Text Messaging Package, Cingular Wireless standard Text Messaging rates apply to messages sent and received. You will be charged for each message sent from and received by your wireless device, regardless of delivery and including invalid votes cast outside of the specified time period. Some messages sent to you will be free; these messages will be identified by the phrase ‘Cingular free msg’. See www.cingular.com for details, or visit a Cingular Wireless store.

When I tried to vote, my handset said 'message not sent' - why?
Like the toll-free voting, while the Cingular Wireless Text Messaging network is designed to handle huge volumes of votes simultaneously, there may be times (particularly just after the show) when it will not be able to handle every message due to network congestion. When this happens, ‘message not sent’ will appear on your handset. Please be patient and try again later. And, don’t forget to vote within your time zone’s voting window! If you are not a Cingular Wireless subscriber, you will not be able to text message your vote for American Idol. Use the toll-free numbers instead.

I truly believe that the vote total percentages we saw tonight are real. I may be wrong but doesn't Dial Idol's dialing software cast votes?

Well I found this on the official Idol website and it is very possible that the have figured how to block many of the votes coming in from Dial Idol software users.

http://www.idolonfox.com/faqs/

What's being done about power dialing?
Production will have in place weekly monitoring procedures designed to prevent individuals from unfairly influencing the outcome of the voting by generating significant blocks of votes using technical enhancements. The producers reserve the right to remove any identified 'power dialing' votes.

I thought MarMema said it was like .05 per text message.

Those vote totals have to be bull - Tay and E has SRO crowds spilling in the streets, McPhee got a photo-op at a school-mandated assembly.

Color me skeptical as well. JMHO but the vote percentages were contrived to increase the hype and create the notion that every vote is important so AI can make more money off the text and landline calls. Nope, I'm not cynical...

I seem to remember early on that the conventional wisdom was that Ace was going to win AI.

The thing about Elliot is he's another Harry Conick Jr. Like Sinatra, great voice, great singing talent, but only appeals to his home town crowd and ladies over 50.

The kinds of songs Elliot sings well are not going to be playable on top 40 mainstream radio. His genre is too limited in this day and age.

He'll do fabulous in New York city and Vegas.

Sorry about that. We have a postal worker in our little town and everyone is afraid of him.

The Postmaster and his co-workers are saints.

I love that commercial and Elliot was hilarious!
He may have a better career acting than singing.

Very impressive. Thanks for sharing that. ANother good soul. The men this year were just far above most of the women, not just in singing but in character as well.

They aren't supposed to. He said so on Rick and Bubba. They encouraged him to break the rules and bring out the harmonica anyway. Funny the next day after the interview he had it on stage with him but chickened out. :) Remember Paula asked what are you holding?

I have to tell you, Jonny, I have a sinking feeling she's gonna win this thing. :(

I do to. And if she does I will have all the evidence I need that this show and the votes are a fraud and I won't watch a single second of any additional seasons.

AND whip out the harmonica. :)

Totally agree. Screw the rules. Go out on your terms. He absolutely wails on the harmonica. Kat would just be left standing there pouting with her dad crying on her shoulder.

Nice math work from the Grey Charles folks and I believe they are correct that AI "manufactures" the voting outcome they want. Plus, they can arbitrarily cast out "power voting" whatever that is. Logically, Elliots fans should vote for Taylor in droves as Kat is opposite of what they like. But if they choke off the phone lines, Taylor's voting ceiling will be lowered thereby altering the possible outcome. If she wins this thing I've had it with this show.
