UFO study finds no sign of aliens Mark Simpson BBC News

The 400-page report was kept secret for six years Alleged UFO sightings A confidential Ministry of Defence report on Unidentified Flying Objects has concluded that there is no proof of alien life forms. In spite of the secrecy surrounding the UFO study, it seems citizens of planet Earth have little to worry about.

The report, which was completed in 2000 and stamped "Secret: UK Eyes Only", has been made public for the first time.

Only a small number of copies were produced and the identity of the man who wrote it has been protected.

His findings were only made public thanks to the Freedom of Information Act, after a request by Sheffield Hallam University academic Dr David Clarke.

The four-year study - entitled Unidentified Aerial Phenomena in the UK - tackles the long-running question by UFO-spotters: "Is anyone out there?"

The answer, it seems, is "no".

HAVE YOUR SAY Never in thirty years of working out of doors at all hours have I seen anything that cannot be explained by a few seconds reasoned thought Barry P, Havant, UK

The 400-page report puts it like this: "No evidence exists to suggest that the phenomena seen are hostile or under any type of control, other than that of natural physical forces."

It adds: "There is no evidence that 'solid' objects exist which could cause a collision hazard."

So if there are no such things as little green men in spaceships or flying saucers, why have so many people reported seeing them?

Well, here is the science bit.

"Evidence suggests that meteors and their well-known effects and, possibly some other less-known effects are responsible for some unidentified aerial phenomena," concludes the report.

"Considerable evidence exists to support the thesis that the events are almost certainly attributable to physical, electrical and magnetic phenomena in the atmosphere, mesosphere and ionosphere.

"They appear to originate due to more than one set of weather and electrically-charged conditions and are observed so infrequently as to make them unique to the majority of observers."

People who claim to have had a "close encounter" are often difficult to persuade that they did not really see what they thought they saw. The report offers a possible medical explanation.

"The close proximity of plasma related fields can adversely affect a vehicle or person," states the report.

"Local fields of this type have been medically proven to cause responses in the temporal lobes of the human brain. These result in the observer sustaining (and later describing and retaining) his or her own vivid, but mainly incorrect, description of what is experienced."

There are, of course, other causes of UFOs - aeroplanes with particularly bright lights, stray odd-shaped balloons and strange flocks of birds, to name but a few.

Yet, it will be difficult to convince everyone that there is a rational explanation for all mysterious movements in the sky.

Some UFO-spotters believe governments will always cover up the truth about UFOs, because they are afraid of admitting that there is something beyond their control.

It is not clear how much time and effort the MoD has spent looking at the skies in recent years, but it appears there are no plans for an in-depth UFO report like the one written in 2000.

A MoD spokesperson said: "Both this study and the original "Flying Saucer Working Party" [already in public domain in the national Archives] concluded that there is insufficient evidence to indicate the presence of any genuine unidentified aerial phenomena.

"It is unlikely that we would carry out any future studies unless such evidence were to emerge."

Freedom of Information request...on UFOs

The last time someone tried one of those in the US 99% of the text was blacked out as too sensitive for public consumption.

I guess in England they just delete all the offending pages before release. :-)

Do you have anything to back up that statement? I have never read anything of a Road Runner reporting a UFO sighting.

Maybe they stay out of sight just enough so we're not too alarmed and generally leave them alone. The movie "ET: THe EXTRAterrestrial" had them collecting plants and one guy got left behind when the crew decided a hasty departure was prudent. Maybe they've got nothing like a split-leaf philodendron, but find the animal life uninteresting.

Animal life including human, of course.

I suspected that they had gotten to me some time ago, in spite of the foil beanie. This explains it all.

Thanks for your help, but now I'm worried about that CIA scanning beam.

Not funny, honey. I saw what I saw and it wasn't a terrestrial aircraft like any in existence today.

Keep tin foil hat handy. In fact, one should add multiple layers of fire retardant material and foil for best results when moon walking.

Hmmmmm. Interesting.

And . . . 12 igloos times 6 chickens = ?

Except on Saturdays and during hurricanes.

Then, it might be 15 slug slimes minus sixteen sentient robots.

My relative, who worked around such, said we had UFO platforms--unmanned and manned versions. Bomber versions and recon versions etc. That the unmanned versions could do the right angle stuff at high speeds . . . and that they mapped China to the inch . . . that they could go to any spot on the globe instantaneously.

Sorry.

I've read so many books and articles over so many decades it all kind of mooshes together. There weren't more than 2-3 such reports, as I recall.

Dr Greer or Linda Moulton Howe or Stanton Friedman might know. But I don't think Friedman would say unless he'd had multiple confirmations. Perhaps the same for Linda. They are sticklers for verification.

Did I miss the part where the researchers said that they had found no signs that there weren't aliens (the unearthly kind)?

No, but that's covered in the pre-requisite course, "Proving Negatives Is For Chumps".

"My relative, who worked around such,"

Do you mean SR-71's or UFO's?

I wonder...If there are no aliens, why keep the report top secret for six years?

"Dr Greer or Linda Moulton Howe or Stanton Friedman might know."

Please, please check some facts about these folks and their scientific documentation!

Yeah.

They can't have it both ways.

1. THERE'S NOTHING TO IT BUT SWAMP GAS

2. SUPREME COURT RULING: IT'S THE !!!!MOST!!!! HIGHLY CLASSIFIED AND CRITICAL INFO OUR GOVERNMENT HAS AND MUST BE PROTECTED SECRET AT VIRTUALLY ALL COSTS.

I've met Linda and Stanton both in person a month ago.

They are quality people. Both are somewhat sticklers for multiple sourced data before putting much stock into it or reporting it.

I wouldn't claim that they have been flawless. Nor have you or I.

I would believe in their scientific analyses over that of quite a list of government types.

I don't know if Greer is a disinformation specialist or totally authentic as he presents himself. In any case, his project is an admirable one though I hope he doesn't succeed soon. Were he to succeed, I think it would signal greater traumas sooner.

Stanton was obviously quite knowledgeable about the nuclear engine field he worked in. He also had a quick grasp of facts about many incidents and issues in the broad UFO field from a clearly scientific perspective. I respected his mind on that score a lot.

I don't know that I have sufficient facts to insist that you are so wrong as to be off the wall. But I don't believe you are as correct as you sound like you feel you are, either.

Also, all of them--Greer, Stanton, Linda--have become boundary workers receiving reports from a broad span of experts working in UFO related industries and positions--historical ones and even some current ones. That fact alone is worth some attention and consideration.
