I meant to say the F-106 flying at Mach 2, not the 727. The F-106 was sent to pursue, but it went way too fast.

Huh? The F-106 could intercept and shadow easily an airliner such as the Boeing 727. The delta wing design had great slow speed handling. They didn't always dash around at supersonic speeds!
