With all due respect, I will have to disagree with you on that one. You fail to realize the subculture of these professions. There is drug addiction, "white slavery", physical threats to consider. Not making any excuse for a bald faced liar with a drug/alcohol problem, but it's an ugly world at the bottom of the food chain. Many do not choose to do these things. They're the ones who don't get noticed until they're dead.
This woman was in the Navy and is a college student. That hardly sounds like the bottom of the food chain.
And before we get to disagreeing again, just because they are in serious denial, or simply stuck inside the pit, does NOT negate that they are making choices. It isn't MY fault. Nor yours.
Intervention can work, sometimes. The point is to never stop trying to bring them out of that culture.
But in America, is it their choice to stay there.
Or to go there.
