I had thought they started allowing women in subs a few years back, but I guess that was just all the media pressure to force the Navy to do so.

It doesn't appear women can serve on subs as their tour of duty, but from the U.S. Navy submarine FAQ:

10. Can women go on submarines?

Women are not currently assigned to submarine crews because of the very limited habitability and privacy onboard a submarine. However, women have been on submarines for short durations as civilian technicians for specialized equipment testing, family members for one-day dependent cruises, and female midshipmen conducting two-day orientation cruises.

Considering my wife is active Navy and I'm recently separated from Naval service (where I worked extensively with new recruits and career counseling), I was pretty sure I was right. But thanks for confirming.
