'24' is a Show Full of Surreal Life Lessons
Morning Call ^ | 4/9/06 | Renee A. James

If you watch Kiefer Sutherland and "24," you learn to handle 60 minutes of tension, heartbreak and deception each week. And that's just between the characters of the president and the first lady.

But although fans love it, even the most ardent learn to overlook a lot regarding plot devices and characters.

Example: Jack Bauer, toughest guy on the planet and lead terrorist hunter, who can withstand torture, gunshots, drugs and severe mental anguish, found a pretty cool job for his annoying daughter, Kim.

After her stint as a runaway and a troubled teen in season one, she became an agent at the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU).

Kim, whose previous claim to heroic fame was escaping a wildcat while lost in the mountains of southern California, was now among the elite specialists who would save the lives of everyday Americans should the very worst take place. God help us.

I've seen a lot of threads on Free Republic about this show "24." Is it any good? Or is it just another liberal claptrap show like "West Wing."

Sam - I'm right there as far as TeeVee. But, do yourself a big favor. Check this out. Join the thread tomorrow night. You will be lost as to the plot lines; but, it is one hell of a ride.

Good guys vs bad guys. No bs.

I rented the previous season's DVD's to get up to speed.

I would disagree! I am not into TV shows much, but this one is pretty decent. Episodes from several years ago have can have a direct effect on this seasons plots! Almost all the shows intertwine with each other.

How many episodes did you watch? You can check them out free at your local library (at least mine has them).

There was also a decent interview with Keifer on Bravo a few weeks ago, it was a repeat and he talks about the show. It's filmed "post 911" but he makes it clear it has nothing to do with present politics.

It's a good interview, very revealing, though I fear he's headed down William Holden's path.

You move in until you're about one inch away, but now you scream the same question at the top of your lungs. Example (screaming): ''WHERE IS THE WAREHOUSE!?'' That technique is very effective. Apparently, terrorists don't like really loud voices because they almost always answer the question the second time.

Not long ago, the NY Times had an article accusing the American military of yelling at detainees to get information.

In the windowless, jet-black garage-size room, some soldiers beat prisoners with rifle butts, yelled and spit in their faces.... Their intention was to extract information to help hunt down Iraq's most-wanted terrorist, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi...
In Secret Unit's 'Black Room,' a Grim Portrait of U.S. Abuse

I guess our military is learning from Jack Bauer, and the Times doesn't like it.

Whoa. I'll have to watch this one. I don't really follow it on a regular basis, since it seems like I'm coming in the middle of the third season of X files and trying to figure out WTH is going on. ;^)

Save yourself before it's too late. If you start watching, you'll quickly learn that it's totally and completely addictive. By that time, you'll be hooked.

I watched "Alias" only one time. It was about corruption within the CIA. For that reason, I watched it never again.

The same thing happened with "24." It is about double-cross, spying, etc, within the gov't.

Both programs cast a bad light on the gov't by commie Hollyweird and should be taken off of the air, directors, producers and writers, etc should be put into re-education camps and/or prison.

End of story.

I ordered up Season 1 on Amazon.com just a couple minutes ago. I am starved for good TV shows and I'm willing to buy DVDs to watch them. MY DVD collection consists of COPS, X-Files, Sopranos, Twin Peaks, Mystery Science Theatre 3000, NYPD Blue and Deadwood. Also, as I mentioned, my iPOD has LOST and The Office. That's about the only TV I've ever watched over the past 15 years.

Buy the DVDs of 24. It's that good. Nothing liberal (or conservative) about it at all. It's just a good show.

On the surface there's nothing very liberal or conservative about it. Beneath the surface, I think the messages about strength and confidence (and the use of violence to fight evil) are mostly conservative.

Better yet turn on A&E on Monday mornings. Four shows back to back gets you through an entire season in one 6-week period. Thank God for things like TIVO and Media Center.

Our government IS corrupt. Why does seeing it exaggerated on TV bother you?

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that. Kiefer is looking too skinny lately.

I've tried to like it. I really have. I've watched plenty of episodes but it always ends up vexing me, so I give up before the season is over.

I know a lot of people like the show, to the point that they tolerate no dissent. I just can't get into it. It's cool that so many do like it, but I shan't be one of them. I should mention that I have notoriously bad taste in TV shows.
