Looks like ~0.5k for the barebone system + ~ 1.4k for two dual core processors + say $300 for registered memory and maybe some hardware (HD w/ OS) from your home supply and maybe an old video card (FAH doesn't seem to be too hard on HD transfers or video (when molecule drawing is off) or RAM once one gets to ~ 500MB).
So it looks like two kilodollars or less should get you going. I think one was built at work this winter for ~3+ k$, but it has fast video and large raided HDs.
BTW, my "premiere" home system is a dual PIII 1.0GHz with 2.7GB RAM. It doesn't fold too fast, but seems to get (almost) everything else done fast enough.

Note: "Premiere" system built (and rebuilt) from used parts over the last 18 months with ~$350 of parts currently included.

Something i have been wondering. will one dual chip fold as fast or slower than two single layer chips say both AMD 3800+ two single verses one dual? I have been reading some on them and the biggest problem have read is memory or should i say the lack of it will slow them down real bad.

Dual cores seem to be the same as two single cores for folding , but I haven't really tried to do an evaluation that would measure to 1% accuracy. In any event, each core and/or processor needs to be running a distinct console folding instance from a unique directory.

will one dual chip fold as fast or slower than two single layer chips say both AMD 3800+ two single verses one dual?Actually, two single A64 3800s will out fold a single A64 X2 3800. The A64 3800 runs at 2.4MHz, and the A64 X2 runs at 2.0MHz. The big difference? The X2 is only 10-20 dollars more than the single core. Also, OC'ing the A64, with a quality board, cooling and memory, you might get 2.9. OC'ing the X2 will get you 2.4, maybe a touch higher at best.I'm playing right now with a X2 4200, 2.2GHz, and have it at 2.52. I think I can get 2.6, but no more.
If money is no object, build 2 A62 boxes. If the biggest bang for your buck is important, go with one X2 box. Option 3 is to start saving your money now, and wait until AMD brings out their Quad-Core.

Really, don't be doing that, I got in trouble for carrying a floppy into Best Buy !! (LOL) Figured the new owners would think the little red flower was factory installed, and not remove it.
Yes, I'm kidding

As with most money is always a concern but i did find a pretty good bang for a few bucks. Wally world had some Compaq's they had on sale i spent less than $800. I am on top 20 producers for first time in a long time and points per week really shot up. I also got a lot of good folds last week.

I did buy two, one full price $345 the other had a torn box $275 then on the advice of you guys a two computer KVM switch $18 and one old clunky monitor I already had and its up up and away.
May of found another one if I get it I will use another 2 computer KVM switch and use my main computer monitor.
Reading on the HP web sight all the mother boards will support both single and dual chips. Maybe later i can just double production by getting some new dual chips.

I don't know much about them, but they are an AMD mobile proc, use little power, don't have any speed to speak of, mainly used in low end laptops. For folding purposes, they would be about equal with an older Duron.
