Looks like ~0.5k for the barebone system + ~ 1.4k for two dual core processors + say $300 for registered memory and maybe some hardware (HD w/ OS) from your home supply and maybe an old video card (FAH doesn't seem to be too hard on HD transfers or video (when molecule drawing is off) or RAM once one gets to ~ 500MB).

So it looks like two kilodollars or less should get you going. I think one was built at work this winter for ~3+ k$, but it has fast video and large raided HDs.

BTW, my "premiere" home system is a dual PIII 1.0GHz with 2.7GB RAM. It doesn't fold too fast, but seems to get (almost) everything else done fast enough.
