Don't forget "The Long Run" by the Eagles.
Released almost at the last second of 1979.
Lots of great music on that album.

I'd love to hear Elliot sing "Sad Cafe".

This post is about song choices.

Some of you Taylor fans have been enthusiastic about Bob Seger's songs as well as the Eagles' songs for this coming Tuesday ( where one of the themes is -- Songs from the Year you were born ).

One thing to note --- CAN THEY BE CLEARED ?

I myself am partial to Seger's NIGHT MOVES because the SOUL in the music as well as the rhythm and energy fits Taylor to a "T". But two things to consider :

1) Each contestants will be singing 2 songs. Therefore, the time limit comes into play again. NIGHT MOVES is a song that can only be done justice to if you give the contestant TIME to BUILD into the music.

Come to think of it, if you listen to UNDER THE RADAR ( Taylor's self-produced CD ), most of the songs he sings are like that... starting low key and building eventually to a flourishing finish. But then it takes at least a minute and a half. Something you CANNOT DO in this venue.

2) THE SONGS HAVE TO BE CLEARED BY WHOEVER OWNS THE RIGHTS.

Not sure if both can be done by Tuesday for Seger's song and the Eagles.

Another bummer. Which just shows you that observations made by Dave of VFTW is spot on.

Wow, Becky, that is good news!

I hope to vote for him this week, if he does his usual great performance, but I am still learning how to do it best.

Kindness matters, and they all sing well.

He was in the wedding crasher movie, which was not my favorite of his, but now I can't remember his name, darn it.

Do you mean Owen Wilson?

Exactly, thanks!

Don't you think Kellie was like a female version of him, or would be a good one?

My teenagers were watching the show and I never had.

My husband said to me that the "Gomer Pyle -looking - guy" sings great, as well as Gomer himself.

I ended up watching it with the kids one night and it was the night of Stevie Wonder.

I saw this young man with tears just streaming down his face as Stevie Wonder walked into the room. Then I began to pay more attention, and got hooked on Elliott.

Acutally, I think Owen Wilson comes across as more worldly than Kellie does. Like he knows it's all a big joke. But it's interesting to think about.

45. You May Be Right - Billy Joel

OMG - you nailed it!!!
That is abso-frickin'-lutely perfect for Tay-Tay. He can go ballistic while he sings it too - kicking over stage props, moshpitting the crowd, screaming in Simon's face...

After that, he either wins the thing hands down or goes out in a fuh-laming blaze of glory!!

Do it, Taylor, Do it!!!

Once again, I find your observations spot-on. I have been wondering lately about how the time constraints hurt certain performers more than others. It most certainly is true in Taylor's case. Even in his critically denounced "Just Once", he got better as the song progressed, but had to clip it so much the buildup was premature and rushed. He is not a technical recording-studio singer, but rather a feel-the-spirit live performance one. One more indication AI is not his thang when it is all said and done.

Q: Do you think most viewers forget that Idol is essentially a reality TV show?

A: Of course they do. If this was a real talent competition, someone like Kellie Pickler wouldn’t be on the show, Taylor would be able show off his real talent and do better songs, and Paula would be sober. In fact, all 3 of the judges would be kicked out because they all offer absolutely no helpful criticisms at all. They’re just basically 3 caricatures of stupidity, but they’re incredibly entertaining, especially train wreck Paula. I hope they keep getting her drunk before the show, because she’s hysterical.

ROTFLMAO!! The more I read about the VFTW guy the more I think I like him.

I think I heard Simon say they can't get the Eagles to let them do their music.

Probably Don Henley with his knickers in a twist again. What a tool.

Don't be surprised if you can't get through for awhile. I tried to vote for Elliott last week and didn't get through
'til after 10pm. It was busy for over an hour!

I agree wth everything you said about Elliott.

I would like to see an Elliott versus Paris finale, because (IMHO) they have the best voices in this year's competition.

Hi, welcome to the thread! And thanks for the link to the article on Elliott. Good article.

Elliott is fast becoming my favorite. (Had Mandisa lasted, I would have been voting for her, but alas ....) I am impressed by Elliott's continued noticeable improvement every week. Kind of reminds me of Carrie in that way. When I first saw her in last year's competition, she was such a little robot that I thought she didn't stand a chance. But she kept improving, and when I saw her in her AI guest appearance this year, I was struck with how she had *continued* to improve. Her stage presence is great now -- she's very relaxed on stage -- and I was really struck by how her voice has continued to blossom and grow as well. There's a real *voice* there now.

Anyway, I could see that kind of continued improvement for Elliott in his future. I'm not sure where his limits are, but I am very sure he hasn't reached them yet. I hope he makes it to at least the top three, because I think he's so unassuming personally that he needs that continued exposure for the public to be able to appreciate him fully, both as a singer and a person.

In addition to having a terrific voice (that is still developing), Elliott just seems like a really decent and kind person. And as you said in another post, kindness matters. :)
