Simon’s ‘Are You Drunk?’ Comment Offends Taylor

TMZ has learned that ‘American Idol’s’ Taylor Hicks was offended by Simon Cowell’s remark after Taylor’s performance Tuesday night. Simon’s comment — “Are you drunk?” — pushed a sensitive button with Taylor. Back in his hometown, Talylor has dealt with others affected by alcohol.

We’re told Taylor will occasionally have a drink, but he is definitely not a drinker. While on ‘Idol,’ Taylor is strictly business, often drinking milk with dinner. Indeed, when two of his close friends visited recently, the friends downed beer after beer while Taylor limited his intake to Coca Cola.

Sources say that Taylor was so upset with Simon’s “drunk” comment that he almost said something on the air, but resisted. After leaving the stage, Taylor made it clear that he was upset.

Brian Less of the Taylor Hicks Band back in Alabama told TMZ recently: “Right now, he (Taylor) knows that he’s got to stay focused out there and do his best. So, Corona’s not going to help him!”

REGARDING AMERICAN IDOL's PRODUCERS MISREPRESENTING QUEEN'S BRIAN MAY's REMARK...

This type of thing happens all the time. Even in the local news. They will come out an interview you for an hour and show 20 seconds of something that was negative you said about something. The same thing goes on in Iraq. The Media only reports the negative. We have no idea what’s positive. Less people die in Iraq every day than die just in LA in Gang violence. It’s just not reported. The media twists facts to get a reaction. It’s just the way it is.

Do we expect anything less from the MSM ? It's sensationalism that they find interesting.

I can understand him beng upset, it seems that Simon's only comments to him lately have dealt with drunkeness. Ala the 'looked like a drunk Father', 'are you drunk'.

Swaying voters through misleading character assassination is getting pretty low.

Singer/actress Mandy Moore and her boyfriend Zach Braff ere devastated they missed Tuesday (11APR06) night's episode of American Idol, because they had to attend the premiere of Moore's film American Dreamz.

Moore plays a singing competitor in the movie, which spoofs the popular show and stars Hugh Grant as a smarmy British host.

The couple never miss an episode of the reality talent competition and recorded it while they were at the film premiere.

She explains, "It's my obsession on Tuesdays, so we have it on TiVo tonight.

"It's just an escape for people. It's a hour and half each week to just sort of relax - it's like junk food.

'Bad Day' continues its 'American Idol'-fueled run atop singles charts

UPI News Service, 04/13/2006

Weekly exposure on "American Idol's" elimination shows helped Daniel Powter's "Bad Day" notch a third week atop Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.

The song, played behind a montage of clips as the rejected "Idol" contestant gets the boot each Wednesday from the Fox TV show, also held on as No. 1 on the Pop 100 and Hot Digital Songs charts.

Sean Paul's "Temperature" was the Hot 100's No. 2 single followed by T.I.'s "What You Know" at No. 3 and James Blunt's "You're Beautiful."

Mary J. Blige's "Be Without You" was No. 5, Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten" came in at No. 6 and Dem Franchize Boyz' "Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It" featuring Lil Peanut & Charlay moved up a slot to No. 7.

Rascal Flatts' "What Hurts The Most" leaped from No. 52 last week to No. 8 on the Hot 100 and the Top 10 was filled out by Bubba Sparxxx' "Ms. New Booty" featuring Ying Yang Twins and Mr. ColliPark and Ne-Yo's "So Sick."

Red Hot Chili Peppers' single "Dani California" debuted at No. 24 on the Hot 100, but popped in at No. 1 on the Modern Rock chart, ending the three-week reign of Pearl Jam's "Worldwide Suicide."

FROM THE WASHINGTON POST ...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/12/AR2006041201997.html

Taylor Hicks is far and away the people's choice for their next "American Idol," based on the number of Taylor tchotchkes sold on eBay over the past month.

In fact, Taylor Hicks items sold on eBay in the past 30 days nearly equal the number of items related to all the other remaining "Idol" contestants combined.

Turns out, when "Idol" contestants finish performing Tuesday nights, viewers aren't just hitting their land lines and cellphones to call in and text-message votes; they're hitting the Internet to buy junk with the name and face of their favorite singer on it.

Nearly 900 Taylor Hicks T-shirts, CDs, bumper stickers, silicone bracelets, beaded bracelets, buttons, necklaces, copies of local newspapers featuring articles on him, magnets, wall clocks, photo key rings, prints, address labels, tote bags and hoodies have been snapped up on eBay over the past month. About 15 transactions occurred during Tuesday's broadcast, in which the prematurely gray bundle of tics and good nature sang his enthusiastic, if goofy, version of Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love."

"What it's telling me is that there is an instant reaction to his performance," eBay spokesman Dean Jutilla told The TV Column.

"He had a lot of energy to it; he seemed to get the crowd pretty fired up, and watching, they felt like, 'He's going to win it, and I want to get something related to him while I can.' "

Sales of rocker Chris Daughtry stuff hit 308 items on the online operation in the past month, 273 for boy toy Ace.

A mere 143 items related to dumb-as-hair Kellie have been sold -- though her week-over-week sales jumped nearly 80 percent last week after she sang "Fancy" during Country Night.

In the past 30 days, there have been just 94 eBay transactions on Katharine McPhee items.

Using the Easy eBay Method to try to gauge "Idol" voting is not foolproof; this week's "Idol" ejectee should have been Little Paris Bennett.

Only 12 bits of Bennett flotsam and jetsam had been exchanged for cash on eBay over the past month. It moved 25 Elliott items and, rounding out the bottom three, 81 items related to country boy Bucky as of yesterday afternoon.

Yes, Bucky and Elliott landed in the bottom three, but they were joined by Ace, not Paris, and Bucky was the one to go.

Last week, the rest of the "Idol"-watching world was shocked when the previously popular Mandisa got the hook; she had never before been among a week's bottom-three vote-getters.

But using the Easy eBay Method, you would have known it was coming. Over the previous 30 days, a mere 10 items related to the plus-size diva had sold -- the least business on any of the remaining contestants.

Jutilla stopped short of forecasting a Hicks win on this year's edition of "American Idol." He'd only go so far as to say that Hicks "seems to be the most popular at the present time."

The research service, which launched in November, is not scientific, he added, noting that when the company tracked traffic on Academy Award-related film items, they saw more volume on "Brokeback Mountain" stuff than on "Crash" items. Yet "Crash" took Best Picture.

Highlights of Nigel's Audio interview as presented above...

Chuck Ross, Editorial Director of Television Week Magazine Interviewed American Idol Producer Nigel Lythgoe after each week performances – Executive Producer Briefing Series:

TAYLOR’S AUDITION

Chuck: I did like Taylor Hicks, the gentleman at the end though that Simon gave thumbs down. But I thought his renditions of both the Sam Cooke song, a change is coming and the Swanee River actually was pretty interesting.

Nigel: Yeah, I loved his version of uh Swanee I must say. And he’s, really has got a sort of Ray Charles slant to his voice you know, and certainly in that movement too, he’s obviously, there’s a slight affectation to him but I think as a character, he is certainly unique.

Chuck: Right, definitely

LIVING FOR THE CITY – Interview March 15, 2006

Chuck: And next comes Taylor Hicks who obviously brings so much of that own personality to anything he sings, and he did it again last night in Living for the City and uh. . .

Nigel: And I think my favorite performance last night. Uhmm the music suited him, the genre of music suited him. Uhmm, his soul patrol was on the show.

Chuck: Right, right

Nigel: I thought he was great last night.

Chuck: Right, no doubt about it.

50s NIGHT – Interview March 22, 2006

Chuck: . . .Simon got big boos by saying it was a complete mess, but it's such a thin song.

Nigel: Yeah, I don't think it was a complete mess though, I think he deserved his boos. But I think it was style over substance. Taylor for me at least gave a grreat performance. . .

Chuck: Absolutely

Nigel:. . and used the guy on the saxaphone. . .and it was Taylor who wanted to feature the saxaphone.

Chuck: Really?

Nigel: . . .and so Taylor always knew he was going to use the saxaphone, it wasn't as though we put it there and Taylor used it.

Chuck: Wow, interesting

Nigel: . . .you know Taylor asked for it. Uhmmm. . .Taylor and Bucky, to be frank with you, both knew their songs were thin when we went out to meet with Barry Manilow.

Chuck: Right. .well very good, well uh, kudos to Taylor for knowing that it needed a little extra. Very smart.

SONGS FROM THE 21ST CENTURY

Chuck: Next I have to say, as I’ve mentioned time and time again. . .one of the people that I am partial to in this competition this year is Taylor Hicks. And again, a song I’m not familiar with but I was actually. . I would second what Paula had to say last night that it was nice to see him stand behind a mic and just sing a song, and I liked the song as I think Simon did too.

Nigel: Yeah, no I didn’t really like the song. . .

Chuck: You didn’t. .

Nigel: It’s amazing that Barry Manilow spoke about 1950s last week, with the beautiful lyrics and the songsmiths that put these beautiful lyrics together.

Chuck: Right.

Nigel: And Taylor’s song I think was, trouble, trouble trouble trouble trouble, trouble, sadness, sadness sadness sadness sadness sadness sadness. And I thought, oh please, I’m desperate to hear him stand behind the microphone and listen to him sing a beautiful song and that as not it for me last night.

Chuck: Excellent.

COUNTRY NIGHT – Interview April 5, 2006

Chuck: Taylor Hicks comes along. .. I see him more of a blues guy than a country guy, but I think country is right up his alley. . and he started with, I think it was probably to the bigger part of your audience, I would guess, even though, a little older, probably the most familiar song and correct if I’m wrong, I think that was sung last night which was Take Me Home Country Roads.

Nigel: Yeah, for me, you know Simon often says it’s a karaoke performance. That for me is a karaoke song. It’s not a great song for Taylor. I would have loved Taylor to have sung something like, “It’s Crying Time Again” by Ray Charles. And to have that sort of bluesy/country feel to it.

Chuck: Yeah, you know that was my sense, to be honest with you if almost everyone last night . . .I really thought that the song selection could have been better last night.

Nigel: Yep, well you know this is their choice. Thousands of country songs and what do you want to go with? Uhhhh Take Me Home Country Roads.

QUEEN NIGHT – Interview April 12, 2006

Chuck: Now we come to. . I have to tell you an real interesting one. . .which was Taylor’s choice of a Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Again, he switched songs. . and I have to tell you uh. . though particularly Simon clearly didn’t like it, but my family just loved it. I have to tell you.

Nigel: Well, you know I love his energy. I love him jumping around, even though he did miss the microphone when he tried to kick it over. .

Chuck: Yeah, which was pretty funny

Nigel: Uhm, Simon unfortunately didn’t miss him, you know, kick a man when he’s down. Oooooh! Simon went for him last night.

Chuck: He sure did. He sure did.

ABOUT THE JUDGES ON QUEEN NIGHT

Nigel: I thought the judges were a little flat last night to be honest. . . . there wasn’t anything outstanding from the judges and I thought they were the ones that were flat last night.

Hi There...

I missed watching AI last night live. I did record it and I am watching it now. I love it when they have them sing a group song and I love the family interviews. Katharine was a little doll when she was younger and she still is a looker. Elliott is a big softy but his momma should have laid off Elliott was sick all the time as a boy in her interview. Every week Elliott gets more handsome, he is a nice looking young man.

I really wonder if that little boy was really Kellie's brother or if he is actually Kellie's son. It is a shame that the grandfather is having to raise both of them.

Chris looks more like his Momma, but I can see a little of his Dad in him. I am still sticking with Chris until the end of AI 2006, but I am getting kinda tired of him singing every song on AI with that "sheep - baaaaah" sound in his singing voice. I don't understand why he keeps doing it, he does not do it often on the songs that he did with his band. He did it tonight again when they did the group song. Oh well! I am really starting to wonder if he is going to take the AI 2006 title. Taylor seems to be way a head of him when it comes to voters and I think Chris will be better off not winning AI 2006.

I am not going to comment too much on Ace, but my Gaydar was going off big time during the brother interview. I just don't like the dude, he cannot sing and he is not good looking in my opinion there is nothing sexy about him. He needs a haircut. He reminds me too much of George Micheal. Sorry Ace fans - he does nothing for me.

Taylor is another one that does ZERO for me. I don't like his singing style or his stage antics. He is not good looking either IMO. - Sorry Taylor fans but I have heard all about how you don't like Chris. We just have to agree on not agreeing with each other.

Paris is just a "stuck on herself little B" and it shows so much on stage and when she is sitting next to the other contestants. I am sick of her forced fake smiles.

I am sorry to see Bucky go before Ace or Paris. I like they guy and I think he will be signed for a CD. He has that deep country twang singing voice and he could sell some CD's as long as the right songs are put before him and the right singing coach as he needs some more training.

Kellie does not get on my nerves like she does with some other FR folks. I think Paris is way more phony than Pickler is. Pickler plays dumb but she does not have her claws out like Paris does. Pickler needs a lot work with a singing coach.

I still believe that the final 3 will be Chris, Taylor and Kellie. But I am starting to believe that we may see the final 2 being Kellie and Taylor because of the way the voting totals are going.

I still believe that Chris would be the top money maker due to him being able to keep his fans interested in him after AI 2006 is over. If Taylor wins. I don't think he would out sell Chris on CD's. Chris could sell nearly as many CD's as Kelly Clarkson has. Chris will have a wider fan base from 13 years old and up to 50 year old folks. I don't see Taylor attracting that wide of an age bracket of fans thus resulting in a much lower amount of CD sales than what Chris would have. If Kellie wins the producers and recording company will lose money on her.

I really wonder if that little boy was really Kellie's brother or if he is actually Kellie's son.

Wow, that's a little uncalled for, isn't it? I'm no Gherkin fan, but just looking at the issue objectively, she would have been something like 13 when she had him. And that's the sort of thing you REALLY cannot hide if you live in a small town like theirs. I'm sure everybody in town would have been beating a path to the media to tell them all about it, if that were true.

I am not saying for sure that it is her kid... I wonder if he is. It wouldn't be the first time a 13 year old girl got pregnant. She may have had that child before she moved in with her grandfather. Her mother probably left that small town as soon as she was old enough. Her mother abandoned Kellie and is possible that she moved there when she was a teen. The town would not have to know it is her child. I'd say the boy is no older than 7, but I would have to watch it again. I just know he looked young enough that he could be Kellie's son and yes... the town would not have to know he was hers if she moved there when he was a baby. It would be easier for her to get a fresh start in a small town if they just said he was her brother.

Even if it is her brother it is sad that the Grandfather had to raise them at their parents are such lowlife's. Momma abandon her and Daddy is in prison.

Will Bucky Covington Join Sawyer Brown?

Bucky Covington recently told media that after he completes the American Idol tour that he would probably be heading to Nashville to look for work. It turns out that Bucky might not have to look for very long. According to a report in the Richmond County Journal, Sawyer Brown’s management team called them looking for help in getting in touch with Bucky. The paper reports that the agency said they planned to offer Bucky a job.

In a recent conference call between Bucky and members of the media, a reporter from the Richmond County Journal told Bucky about the call from Sawyer Brown’s management team saying “they want to hire you right now.” Bucky responded “That’s what I heard. What happened to their singer?” The reporter didn’t know and said he was just passing on the message.

Interestingly enough, Sawyer Brown originally got their big break on a reality singing competition called Star Search. There was no information reported on if Sawyer Brown’s management team was interested in Bucky actually joining Sawyer Brown or if the offer was something else such as performing as an opening act for the band. Bucky is actually still under contract with American Idol, so American Idol management would have to give their blessing before Bucky could take advantage of any musical opportunities that came his way.
