Elliott was good. Not great, but good. One of the best performances of the night.
AKA "Nubbin"
Lisa was the worst tonight, she should go. Kellie was almost as bad, but I fear we will have to watch her fake naive country bumpkin act for a long time. I hope she is NOT in the finals. It should be Taylor vs. Chris. I'd love to see Mandisa get in the final 3. The producers are pushing for Chris, though, so watch for him to win.
Lisa is going home for similar star-deach reasons, although I don't find her the least bit arrogant like I do Paris.
Totally agree. Lisa is not as polished, but she is sure a lot more likeable than Paris. Paris is definitely talented, but her conceit is repulsive.
So glad he shined.
Overall, I agree with the consensus here that tonight wasn't great for any of the contestants.
A word about the makeovers: I like what the makeover people are doing with Taylor. His hair looks much better cut shorter like that. They also lightened his skin tone and probably did some other more subtle things. He looks younger and actually more like the handsome guy he used to be when he was younger.
I noticed with Pickler that they toned down her makeup a lot. Tonight her makeup was almost identical to what they used to do for Carrie Underwood at different times last year. Her performance was OK. Not the worst nor the best of the night. She doesn't have a strong voice and has a tendency to go flat from time to time, so she covers it up with light, fluffy song choices.
You're right that they are doing the most that can be done with Elliott. The others all looked about the same.
The singing: For me, tonight there is almost a tie for best between Taylor and Paris. I put Taylor first because he showed he has a powerful, smooth side to his voice. I put Paris second because that's the youngest and most natural performance we've seen from her. Elliott goes third for me. All of the others were blah for me tonight. Unfortunately, I think that was Mandisa's worst performance. She was sharp and shrill throughout the song.
McPhee picks the strangest songs. Maybe it sounds different live and in person, but to me she sounded sharp throughout that song. Like Ace, Katharine sometimes has a nasal quality to her singing, and that was too apparent tonight. Oh, and you're right. She has the personality of a brick. There's something strange about that girl, although I can't put my finger on it.
Sorry. I know you like him, but Chris was just downright horrible tonight. Rock performances like that are a dime a dozen. Heck, even some of the losers on that Rock NXTRS show a few months ago (or whatever it was called), were way better than what Chris showed tonight. And speaking of strange, the guy is just a drag. He's always so grim and seemingly cold. I get more than a vibe of arrogance from him. Who was it you used to call Slingblade? I can picture Chris actually slinging a blade. Maybe it's just a bad rocker attitude act he puts on. I don't know. But to me he has all the charm and warmth of a viper. The other day I said undertaker, but tonight the look in Chris' eyes when Simon criticized him was seriously frosty.
Ace...what can I say. He sings through his nose. Literally. He has a very strong nasal quality to his singing. He only loses it when he goes into a very high register. I love his smile, but he only has a small singing talent.
Bucky...that was probably his best performance of the competition. It was good enough to keep him in another week, but Simon seemed determine to sabotage his chances. Bucky seems like a sweetheart and he really is cute, but he also only has a small talent.
Lisa should be the one to go tomorrow. She's a lovely girl and a real trouper, but she keeps throwing in clunky performances.
I still haven't picked one favorite to root for this year, but am edging close to liking Taylor well enough to hope he wins.
He did. We all have our own tastes, of course. For me Taylor was the best of the night, followed closely by Paris and Elliott.
I know you and Jonny like Chris, but I find myself liking him less and less as the weeks go on. Tonight he was just horrible in my opinion.
And lo, the West Coast Wrapup was beheld on the thread ....
[I didn't take good notes tonight, I'm tired and headachey and isn't it a good thing I'm not one of the judges? :) ]
Lisa - You're going to look great on Broadway! ... in the chorus.
Kellie - Well, her makeup finally looked really good tonight. But I agreed with Simon that it was not a good song choice. That song is one of those throwaway songs that singers need in their repertoire to rest their voices during a concert between a couple of difficult songs. It certainly is not the sort of thing to really strut your stuff. Somebody tell me again, why does Simon think the Gherkin is going to win this thing?
Ace - What beautiful lyrics that song has! But one of Ace's weaker performances (and goodness knows that isn't saying much). Danger, Will Robinson, danger! (of going home)
Bucky - Well, if I could have heard him over the band, and understood the lyrics, I think I might have liked this performance. Also in danger. (Duh. What else is new?)
Taylor - Must be back on his meds again! :) (Kidding, kidding!) He was in good voice tonight but that song wasn't exactly a show-stopper, was it? (Memo to Taylor: Never, ever again wear a short jacket on TV. The man has a certified Big Butt.)
Mandisa - Hate to say anything negative about my favorite in this horse race, but that song did her no favors. The "tune," such as it was, was all over the place, and the quick tempo did not allow her to really develop any notes and show off her stuff. Plus she was pitchy. I understand that she liked the sentiment, but WHEN are singers going to learn not to pick songs because their grandmother likes them or whatever? However, when I voted for her, I got a number of busy signals, so perhaps this won't count against her. (Oh, and Memo to Mandisa: The tight jeans do you no favors. Stick to dresses whenever possible.)
Chris - Not my favorite of his performances. At all. I am not big on metal rock (or whatever you call that style), and he sort of shouted his way through the whole thing. Chris needs to realize that his fan base is WOMEN, who are more into cute Alt-rock stars with sexy, growly voices than they are into angry metal rockers. Betcha he gets fewer votes this week than last week.
McPhee - My DH liked it; I didn't. Her upper register is sort of squealy or squeaky or something -- can't put my finger on it -- and does not mesh well with her lower register (which is, I must admit, very good). That, plus the fact that I am biologically unequipped to appreciate her mammaries in the way that so many others apparently do, put her in the bottom half of the evening for me.
Paris - You know, I find her so acutely boring that I can't even comment legitimately on her performance. Next ....
Elliott - I was not impressed by this week's song, but voted for him because of the promise he has shown in other performances. He's in danger, though.
*******
This week's show in general was a problem for me because of a problem that I have with music from the last five or six years or so. I find it very ... complicated. And not very melodic. There are so many sort of repetitive songs that lean on a catchy rhythm and use about five notes, and they all sound the same to me. Much of the music tonight was of this type and it does almost as little for me as metal rock.
Snooze ....
What I puke in after Ace sings.
ROFL so hard I'm having trouble typing .... tea on the screen! Thanks! *snort*
I thought it was my TV. I kept cranking up the sound but it still didn't sound right. I think something was screwed up.
She has a real "deer in the headlights" look in her eyes sometimes. I would pick her from the lineup as "Most Likely to Go Postal."
Simon's advice to Chris was interesting,
telling him to play more to his female audience.
Kind of funny, tho. Last week he applauds Chris for not compromising,
and this week he slams him for staying too much the same!
I liked the tone of Taylor's performance.
More calm and less herky jerky.
Looking forward to better performances next week.
I just want to hear Elliott sing twice in one show. ":^)
Not to worry: I have more than enough appreciation to cover for the both of us.
Or perhaps all of us.
I never lost my HD and DD feeds last night.....but last nights performances made me wish I had. Not a single good performance IMHO.
That would be my rating as well. :)
Heh?
The American public has always shown an affinity toward stupid acting blondes....
Like Bucky?
That is soooo funny! :)
