NEW YORK, March 13 (UPI) -- Religious parody on "South Park" has led Isaac "Chef" Hayes to quit the Comedy Central cartoon.
Hayes, who has been with "South Park" since 1997, issued a statement Monday saying he has requested a release from the show because of recent episodes displaying "inappropriate ridicule of religious communities."
"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry toward religious beliefs of others begins," Hayes said.
"Religious beliefs are sacred to people and at all times should be respected and honored. As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."
Hayes did not specify any episodes in particular, but a recent show called "Bloody Mary," which included the defiling a statue of the Virgin Mary drew fire from Roman Catholic groups.
I bet they're wrong about which episode really upset him.
I love Chef... but I also understand there's plenty for a religious man to be upset about in South Park, and I don't fault him if he doesn't want to play any more. After all... South Park should not really be viewed by anyone ;~D
Do you think it was the Scientology episode that upset him? BTW, one of the funniest episodes ever.
Chef is upset because of the Scientology episode. Isaac Hayes is a big Scientologist. South Park has madefun of religions for years and it wasn't untilthe Scientology ep that got him upset.
Typical from a $cientologist.
Can't handle anyone telling the truth about their cult.
You beat me to it. Yeah it has to be the Scientology episode.
Children ... Somebody has gotten to Chef. I assume it was Tom Cruise's lawyer.
Had nothing to do with it. It had to do with a short man and a small room for storing clothes (no I'm not going to be the first to say it,lol)
I am pinch-pinging this South Park story, hopefully only temporarily until he returns!
FREE EVENING STAR! - Please! :~D
I can understand a Scientologist being upset about that episode - but how incredibly disingenous for Hayes to only NOW come to such an epihany. I guess the only sacred cow is your own...
Children ... I did not know that. That explains everything. Why would the article talk about Bloody Mary and ignore this obvious connection?

bump
O no! They killed The Chef!
Arghhh....didn't abort the post fast enough...
What the heck?
Oh, so now after 4 thousand episodes he figured out they offend people? Man, the guy is really on top of things. No big deal though. It's not like they can't get someone new to come on the show and say "what are you childrens doing now?"
