The ensemble drama "Crash" pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Academy Awards history, winning best picture Sunday over the cowboy romance "Brokeback Mountain," which had been the front-runner.
"Crash," featuring a huge cast in crisscrossing story lines over a chaotic 36-hour period in Los Angeles, rode a late surge of praise that lifted it past "Brokeback Mountain," a film that had won most other key Hollywood honors.
In a year of provocative films at the Oscars, "Crash" was one of the fiercest, a portrait of simmering racial and cultural tension among blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians and Arabs.
The other best-picture nominees emerged either out of Hollywood studios or their art-house affiliates. But "Crash" was a true Oscar rarity, shot outside the system on a tiny $6.5 million budget, then acquired by independent distributor Lionsgate at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival, where the film premiered.

Your son is wrong.
No, not the Spielberg movie. It was up for Best Foreign Film.
Agreed. (evil cackle)
I did see BBM and thought it was an amazing film - despite the subject matter.
Unfortunately, I didn't see Crash in the theater and only saw it on DVD. Still, I was blown away. I thought it was an incredible film and deserved the Best Picture award.
I still would have voted for Walk the Line though.
Brokeback Was Reamed
Really?
Larry Elder liked it.
So did I.
No, you are wrong.
His son is right.
Larry Elder also liked 'JFK.'
This is real classy stuff:
Lyrics to the Oscar winner for Best Song:
[Chorus 2X: Shug - singing] + (Djay)
You know it's hard out here for a pimp (you ain't knowin)
When he tryin to get this money for the rent (you ain't knowin)
For the Cadillacs and gas money spent (you ain't knowin)
[1] Because a whole lot of b****es talkin s*** (you ain't knowin)
[2] Will have a whole lot of b****es talkin s*** (you ain't knowin)
[Djay]
In my eyes I done seen some crazy thangs in the streets
Gotta couple hoes workin on the changes for me
But I gotta keep my game tight like Kobe on game night
Like takin from a ho don't know no better, I know that ain't right
Done seen people killed, done seen people deal
Done seen people live in poverty with no meals
It's f***ed up where I live, but that's just how it is
It might be new to you, but it's been like this for years
It's blood sweat and tears when it come down to this s***
I'm tryin to get rich 'fore I leave up out this b****
I'm tryin to have thangs but it's hard fo' a pimp
But I'm prayin and I'm hopin to God I don't slip, yeah
[Chorus]
[Djay]
Man it seems like I'm duckin dodgin bullets everyday
N***az hatin on me cause I got, hoes on the tray
But I gotta stay paid, gotta stay above water
Couldn't keep up with my hoes, that's when s*** got harder
North Memphis where I'm from, I'm 7th Street bound
Where n***az all the time end up lost and never found
Man these girls think we prove thangs, leave a big head
They come hopin every night, they don't end up bein dead
Wait I got a snow bunny, and a black girl too
You pay the right price and they'll both do you
That's the way the game goes, gotta keep it strictly pimpin
Gotta have my hustle tight, makin change off these women, yeah
[Chorus]

Asians, as in Koreans?
Sure, wise one. Whatever.
Does that happen in the movie?
Morgan Freeman is one of the most sensible people in Hollywood, actually.
He isn't a conservative by any means, but he's a reasonable man, and any promiment black man who's got the guts to say that he doesn't like Black History Month because 'Black History is American History' gets some props from me.
Either you haven't seen the movie, or English is you third language and you don't see very well.
Try again.
Yeah, I recall reading that thread. It makes him a hypocrite more than anything, typical lying liberal. Fine actor though, I'll concede that.
P.F: Are you generally optimistic about what's going on in the world. Are you concerned? Are you worried?
M.F: Oh, I'm very worried about what's going on in the world at the moment because we have this Napoleonic president, by Napoleonic I mean he's a man who just seems to need to search himself. It doesn't make sense....
Yes.
Your point is?
Parton was robbed. Of course, the song did mention Jesus (and the Lord) so that doomed it with the Hollywood crowd even though it was about not judging others.
I've seen it 3 times.
One particular scene that comes to mind is when the State Attorney General (who had recently been carjacked by two blacks, with much corresponding publicity) offered an important job to a black man to help boots his diversity quotient. The black guy could see the motivation behind the job offer, and was obviously offended. A very clear portrayal of the subtle racisms that is inherent in all "diversity" promotions and hirings.
Not your typical Hollywood fare, IMHO.
On New Years Eve, I saw Memoirs of a Geisha.
I didn't go willingly. The girlfriend picked it.
But you know what? I liked it.
The movie was entirely worthy of the three Oscars it won.
