'Crash' Pulls Off Best-Picture Oscar
yahoo.com ^ | 3/5/06

The ensemble drama "Crash" pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Academy Awards history, winning best picture Sunday over the cowboy romance "Brokeback Mountain," which had been the front-runner.

"Crash," featuring a huge cast in crisscrossing story lines over a chaotic 36-hour period in Los Angeles, rode a late surge of praise that lifted it past "Brokeback Mountain," a film that had won most other key Hollywood honors.

In a year of provocative films at the Oscars, "Crash" was one of the fiercest, a portrait of simmering racial and cultural tension among blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians and Arabs.

The other best-picture nominees emerged either out of Hollywood studios or their art-house affiliates. But "Crash" was a true Oscar rarity, shot outside the system on a tiny $6.5 million budget, then acquired by independent distributor Lionsgate at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival, where the film premiered.

I didn't see the movie, which I why I asked about the plot. On the basis of the plot points discussed here, I don't intend to go see the movie. Kind of like relying on a reviewer or on a word of mouth in deciding whether to see a movie. I just don't want to see a movie that takes an ambiguous approach to a person going to jail for a crime they didn't commit. There is enough injustice in this world for me not to want to go see more injustice in a movie.

Lol.

I know you are joking, but just so you know, the Republican State Party Chair, our 2000 Candidate for Governor, and a whole lot of other prominent R's endorsed (and I assume voted for) the D in that race as well (it was for Washington State Auditor). Not only was the R convicted of assult, but he was a conspiracy nut who pretty much just ran so he could print some crazy crap about some conspiracy in the voters guide.

And, finally, The D was BY FAR the best statewide elected D in the state. He had supported several good Republican bills that were in the relm of Government accountability (which is the prime job of the State Auditor, to monitor things like that).

since when does someone from China know anything about being a cowboy?

That explains why he called sheepherders cowboys!

I haven't seen the movie, but that's a really bad arguement.

When since does a guy born in Australia in the 1900's know anything about Judea 33 AD?

Yet, I still thought Passion of the Christ was a good movie.

Penguins was dissapointment...over rated.

I enjoyed it. It reminded me of National Geographic's documentary style before they discovered political correctness.

That said, I didn't find it to be particularly special. Good, but I wouldn't watch it again.

Thank goodness that Broke-back Mountain lost, because wouldn't you know it, it was it was directed by an Asian,

Silly comment. What did Sergio Leone about making westerns?

He did a pretty darn good job.

ROFL. Hey, first D I've voted for in 20ish years. That guy was something else.

BTW...I agree with you regarding actors politics. I don't even care if I know—that is until they start talking so much I can't get away from it. Sarandon, Streisand, Reiner, Baldwin, Clooney...they just make everything about politics to the point I just can't deal with it anymore and quit going to see their movies.

It doesn't mean they are not talented, just that I am irritated to the point I start feeling insulted by their mere presence. For instance, Hanks may be a leftist, but he is polite and doesn't advertise it and show up at every other rally and make his Oscar speeches all about how he is proud that he doesn't connect with middle America. Somehow I think he would find that idea elitist and appalling.

And for me, that is the difference.

But with the use of a little artistic license, he showed his view of what happened. As I've said before, it's entertainment.

:thumbs up:

I didn't see the movie>

Yea, I got you mixed up with A Jovial Cad. Sorry.

Don't let that one small plot point prevent you from seeing the movie. It truly was just one small point in a multi faceted story.

I'm EXTREMELY sensitive to Liberal PC crap in my entertainment, and I though this movie dared to go where Hollywood NEVER does. Exposing the racism of minorities, and "Racially Conscious" Liberals as well. I kind of thought that was the point of the movie. To point out that that type of subtle liberal racism is just as bad, and just as prevalent.

Really, take a chance and rent it.

I figured Penguins had something extra being that it was a feature film.

I don't want to go to the movies to see a glorified Discovery Channel production.

I have cable to watch nature shows.

Did March of the penguins win anything?

I think it was Rush that talked about this movie. He said that the guys filming it saw baby penguins that fell into the icy water and they just sat there and let them die. Had a point to prove.

Just sickening.

BTW, I actually thing Sarandon and Baldwin are $#!tty actors too.

Clooney, etc. That's a different story. Gigantic elitist arrogant jerks, perhaps, but good actors.

I tend to look at art this way: If it's told from an honest, sincere, point of view, not from a condencending, preachy point of view, I think it's good regardless of if I agree with it's particular point if view.

With actors, I'll admire their talent nomatter what, but I do try to support ones that are, again, honest and sincere with their views and not condencending and preacy, regardless of their views.

It probably would have done better if they had included some gay penguins from German zoos.
