'Crash' Pulls Off Best-Picture Oscar

The ensemble drama "Crash" pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Academy Awards history, winning best picture Sunday over the cowboy romance "Brokeback Mountain," which had been the front-runner.

"Crash," featuring a huge cast in crisscrossing story lines over a chaotic 36-hour period in Los Angeles, rode a late surge of praise that lifted it past "Brokeback Mountain," a film that had won most other key Hollywood honors.

In a year of provocative films at the Oscars, "Crash" was one of the fiercest, a portrait of simmering racial and cultural tension among blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians and Arabs.

The other best-picture nominees emerged either out of Hollywood studios or their art-house affiliates. But "Crash" was a true Oscar rarity, shot outside the system on a tiny $6.5 million budget, then acquired by independent distributor Lionsgate at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival, where the film premiered.

I think you've convinced me not to see it.

JFK did make stuff up to turn it into a drama, no doubt, but the reason it did that was to throw all that stuff up there, to bring it to awareness. Like you said, it's not a documentary

Just like Michael Moore with Farenheit 911.

Fine with me.

I don't really give a crap. Besides, you already essentially said you weren't going to before hand.

But you might want to think twice about judging something you haven't seen. It makes anybody look like a fool.

Stone's position was that JFK never intended to go into Vietnam and that the 'military-industrial complex' gunned down Kennedy.

Wow, you decry my opinion by opining merely that I am 'ignorant'.

Precisely. You continue to demonstrate it with every slobbering post over this politically correct silliness known as "Crash."

The shoe aptly fits, and you wear it well. Carry on.

"If you think that was the message of Crash...you are far too young to be allowed to see it."

I'm 37. And it doesn't matter if I was 17, my opinion stands. You want to defend Yet Another Chunk Of Hollywood Trash, go ahead and do so. I'll keep judging this crap as I please.

There's a difference.

For one thing, Stone never claimed it to be the truth. It was a drama and he said so.

The second thing is, that some of the stuff probably 'was' true, or at least was leaning in the right direction.

If you think Oswald killed JFK, there's a bridge in brooklyn I'd like to sell you.

I think it's more likely that Castro or even LBJ himself had it done then some giant conspiracy with virtually everybody involved done for the sake of the military industrial complex, but I'm not so naive to think we know the whole story.

Hello everyone. I used to post a lot somewhere else under this name. Now I'm here. Cheerio and hi again.

Meanwhile, Jon Stewart wasn't half bad ... the reason the MSM is taking so many potshots immediately after the show is that he got in as many shots at libleft idiot Hollywood voluptuaries as he did at our side of the aisle. I was laughing out loud when he made the joke about "Some say Hollywood is an out of touch, self centered, innocence stealing, moral vacuum of sexual gratification ... I don't really have a punch line here".

Kong was the best movie achievement of the year, btw, and I very seriously doubt even the worst LAPD types do to women, black, white or otherwise, what the Dillon character did in Crash. That said, it's a great, great movie.

It's a 'conservative' position to believe that Oswald didn't kill JFK

Oswald did assassinate President Kennedy, and all by his Castro-loving lonesome. Only doctrinaire leftists, and kooky John Birch types, assert otherwise.

But continue embarrassing yourself...

Kong's been my favorite classic monster since I first saw the '33 version when I was five. That one was just a neat technical achievement.

I will admit to owning and loving the cheesy 70s remake--but this new one was absolutely heartbreaking and beautiful (albeit a little flawed in places). Kong was finally given a back story and a personality and a soul--and the result was magnificent. Naomi Watts should have gotten a nod for her work--she, in essence, helped create his character through her performance.

Oh, I could go on and on about it, but I already hear a bunch of freepers groaning... ;-)

You haven't judged anything. You've hurled insults.

That's not an opinion, that's a rant.

Yeah, that's a weird theory. A communist shooting a American president. Just bizarre.

Castro probably did kill JFK.

But there is no way in hell Oswald was alone.

Unless you buy into Arlen 'Single Bullit' Specter's theory.

I predicted CRASH would win. Just luck. Glad Brokeback didn't make it...although a friend who saw the latter said she thought it was really about sorrow.

As I just said to someone else, communist probably did kill Kennedy, probably Castro.

But if you think Oswald was alone, I think you're nuts.

Unless you buy into Arlen 'Single Bullit' Specter's theory.
