Books usually are always better than the movie.
In many cases, you're right. But "Jaws" is I think one exception. The book is a lot weirder, sleazier, and more over-the-top. The movie goes straight for the horror/suspense/action elements and leaves out all the weird subplots (there's even one involving the mafia and the mayor of Amity). And it works better because of that.
Of course, it's all a matter of opinion in the end, I guess.

"Jaws" is on again at 11:00 and if you turn it to the part where they just got finished singing in the boat and they take a long view of the boat, water and sky, you'll see the falling star at the time.
