The Hobbit Hole XXVIII - Through shadows to the edge of night
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 02/24/2006 9:52:11 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Through shadows to the edge of night

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Most landlords don't like pets in the house, though, around here anyway.

Most, but I've never had trouble finding places that would. And the duplex I was in, he had said no pets, but I negotiated them in... I had them with me when I looked at the place. He saw a clean vehicle with well cared for dogs that didn't smell bad... he came around.

I know what you mean, Jen. We didn't even take many pictures when I went up to WA last month! And Hair is the Picture Queen!

We were all just ~really~ enjoying being complete sloths for a weekend. :-D

His plane lands just before 11pm EST. He'll be traveling all day, poor guy. We just live SO far apart it takes forever even by plane.

No kidding :-( Well, that's why you're moving!

All I can say is that I am very, very grateful for cell phones, email, internet, and other such modern conveniences that make a long-distance relationship moderately torturous instead of impossible.

Amen to that!

Is the hole digging something I could do on my own? Maybe I could get the materials this weekend and at least get started on putting in posts and all.

I hope so! I don't want to dig all the holes :~D

I'll teach ya everything I know about fence building. It'll be good for your arms :~D

I've got a post hole digger and I've got the driver to drive the metal T-posts.

We need to take a picture and draw in where you intend to put the fence to show and perhaps negotiate with the landlord if he's got opinions on it. I'll do that (take pictures) today if you want.

Sure...pictures would be good.

I want to get this started ASAP!

I'm thinking I'll go reallly skimpy on the land behind the store - hardly fence any of that. Mostly just do a line on the other side of the drive.

The less he has to complain about, the easier this will be.

The more you fence in the more you have to mow, too. :~D

That's very true too. ;-)

I just hope I can handle the fact that it's pretty rocky here. Gonna make hole digging and stake pounding-in a little hard.

But I'm motivated. That helps.

Unless the ground there is radically different from here, it's really not rocky. There's bands, layers of that round glacial till, but it's not everywhere, and it's just a layer, IOW, not all the way down.

Oh, good...I was afraid there'd be TONS of those round rocks, to the point where it'd be all but impossible to space anything evenly.

Regarding the landlord...I'm thinking maybe I'll get some cash on the way home so when I do go to talk to him about this in the next few days, I can also pay him a kind of partial rent for the next little bit. He knows about the fridge and he knows I've done some clean-up work, I'm sure...but I want to show I'm gonna be a good tenant.

If you're still there...can you call my phone real quick? It got moved out of the way last night when we were playing a game, and now I can't seem to locate it.

Or you could just offer to use that cash to do improvements like the fence. He might go for that and then you get to enjoy the use of the money too. Still makes you a good tenant

He doesn't really care for fences, I don't think.

The gardening type stuff will likely fall into the good tenant category, though.

Are you keeping you receipts on everything you spend to improve the place? I would definitely recommend that.

Are you gonna pay him rent for April? Does he know?

I just feel like he's probably wondering, because we had a deal, then he changed it. It'll feel more like you've got a real rental agreement when he cashes a check that says "rent" on it.

In hindsight, it's really good that he had that guy do all that cleanup, because it really was depressing. It took away your free rent, but that hurts less than doing all the work now that you have a job.
