The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I don't think in all the time I've had horses he's ever been talked into getting on one. The only time I ever remember him on a horse, it was at a family friend's horse in Arizona when we were just kids.

We'll see. ;~)

Ah well then, it ain't gonna happen. If he's made it to 40-something years old without succumbing to the lure of horses, while being exposed to them, then there ain't a snowball's chance that he's going to do it now. He may do it for a while to appease Ruthie, but that's about as far as it'll go. That's been my experience anyways. And there's nothing wrong with that, as long as Ruthy keeps that in mind. She can just do her horsey stuff with you and the girls and y'all will have a great time.

I think you're probably right on his personal involvement in it, but I don't think he'd stand in the way of it. I can picture riding lessons and perhaps horse boarding in the future for the wimmin folk, but on his own free time, I think he'd rather have a boat.

That's the way my husband is. He's got no problem with my having them, or the money I spend on them, or anything else, (aside from the occasional snide remark about wishing he was a horse) and he'll feed them for me if I'm out of town, but he's got no desire to ride or to be around them. I occasionally entertain the fantasy (coz I know that's what it is) that he'll go riding with me some day, as evidenced by the spare saddle purchases I've made here lately, but I know it's more likely that pigs will fly first. He might go if I tried to push the issue, but he'd be miserable and would make me miserable because of it, so I guess I'd better let that dog lay.

Mom and baby went to the vet's last night, retained placenta. Both home now, mare will be on penicillen twice a day for ten days to head off infection and banamine once a day for same period to attempt to head off colic.

I think they will both be fine. We are not going to rebreed her this year and will rethink breeding her in the future - she's a great mare and we'd hate to lose her.

Fancy hasn't foaled yet but she's only 4-5 days overdue and vet said again last night - everyone was going over this year for some reason.

Thanks everyone for the compliments on the kid - I'm too tired and too far behind at work to reply to everyone but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate it.

Oh - jeepers. Sorry to hear all was not calm and quiet last night. I hope Farah does well. What do they do for retained placenta? Give something that helps her body to expell it naturally or do they go in?

There are parts of it I think he'd enjoy, I think he'd like the quiet and woods of it... I think he'd enjoy camping as a part of riding, we used to do a lot of camping. But I don't think he'd like the part about the horse. He'd enjoy a one day trip on a very steady mule named Jack, but not the part about understanding and overcoming the somewhat fractious nature of horses.

I went to work this morning for about 45 mins. Came home sick, went to bed and just got up. Must be a bug of some sort. Head hurt, stomach hurt and I was nauseous. Good part is, it finally stopped raining.

So sorry, get well soon.

Well I rode today for a little more then an hour. The shoe stayed on, but the duct tape wore off, so I guess that won't work:\ Harley was moving fine, in fact he really seems to be smoother. I think he is adjusting to the feel of the new shoes.

Glad the shoe stayed on... does it feel insecure? Or is it just disconcerting to see that chunk missing?

It felt pretty secure when I was cleaning his feet. It's not JUST the chunk missing, it's that on that side, he's got 3 nails, but two of them look barely in, and looks like they could crack out at any time.

~sigh~ - yeah - I gotcha. Hopefully it's better than it looks. I have no idea if there are any of the fillers or epoxies or bondo type stuff that could be made to work and add some stability there... Any talk about it with the farrier?

Yes, there is some very good fillers that bond to the hoof very very well. I just didn't think about it till after he left. I don't know why he didn't think of it. He's told me about it. Unless he just didn't have any.

That will be my next fix, if he loses it before Mon., If he would lose it before Mon. I'd take him over to Celia's then. Chris is going to be at her house then.

Here's that foot again. You can see that especially that first nail is just not holding on to much.

Boy - if you have the opportunity to get it fixed before it breaks of and takes another chunk with it, I think you're much better off.

If it were me, I'd be treating him really carefully until then. A few days off aren't gonna be too bad for him for your upcoming ride, but the hoof damage might be.

Well I've been debating all day since thinking about that bondo stuff, about calling him, and seeing if he has any, if he could do it, and if it would make the foot more stable, or if pulling that shoe off and putting it back on would defeat the purpose.

Well, I wonder the same thing... or if the shoe even needs to come off. If it's adhesive, maybe it can be packed in there without further stress...

What do I know about farriery though.... not much!

Oh, yeah that was something else I wanted to ask. Maybe the shoe wouldn't have to be pulled. I don't know either...

Well, ecurbh had a setback today at work, recopying this from the HH:

Well, I've seen it coming for a while, but it still ain't fun. Basically, the company is "reorganizing", which involves closing this office and moving all operations to the home office in Florida. Some folks (myself included) will be staying on for a short transition period, but we are all encouraged to go ahead and begin looking for other employment. Nearly half of our staff was let go this morning.

Man, I ~hate~ looking for work. This hobbit doesn't like change.

Ah - I didn't see that you had actually almost announced this earlier. I didn't want to say anything till you had.

There was always a risk with such a small niche company that it wouldn't last, but it's at least been a terrific resume builder for you. It gives you some bullets about web design that you needed on your resume to find that kind of work again. You're bona fide now. ;~D

Heck... I don't want to wish you bad luck in the job search, but I'm kindof hoping it means we get to ride more this summer :~D

I love you, and we'll be just fine :~D
